Alfred Roome
Alfred Wallace Roome (22 December 1908 – 19 November 1997) was an English film editor and occasional director. Biography Born in London, in 1908, he first worked in the film industry as a film editor on the 1932 British comedy film '' Thark''. He went on to edit mostly comedies over the next forty years including many of the Aldwych Farces films, and Will Hay films such as '' Boys Will Be Boys''. He directed crime film '' My Brother's Keeper'' (1948) and comedy film '' It's Not Cricket'' (1949). In the latter years of his career he edited the Carry On series of films alongside the director, Gerald Thomas. He retired in 1975 after editing ''Carry on Behind''. Personal life Roome married the actress Janice Adair on 20 February 1936; they remained married until her death in 1996. Charles Roome
Charles Roome (August 4, 1812 – June 28, 1890) was an American soldier, engineer, and businessman. Early life Roome was born on August 4, 1812, in New York City. He was the eleventh of twenty children born to Jemima ( née Lewis) Roome (1797–1854) and Nicholas Roome (1775–1824), a wealthy merchant who served as Superintendent of the "Old State Prison" in New York City. His paternal grandparents were Rachel (née De Groot) Roome and Peter Roome, a descendant of William Jansen Roome, a New Amsterdam settler. His maternal grandparents were Rachel (née Van Benschoten) Lewis and Thomas Lewis, who served during the Revolutionary War in the 3rd Regiment of the Line under Col. Howard Le Chevalier Roome ( – April 1931) was an American football player. He played halfback for Yale University championship teams of 1905 and 1906 and was selected by Walter Camp as a first-team All-American in 1905. Roome graduated from Yale in 1907 and married amateur golfer Florence Newman Ayres in April 1909. In May 1920, Roome won a $4,100 bet by climbing the 47 flights of stairs from the sub-cellar to the cupola of the Equitable Building in New York in 8 minutes, 52 seconds. Roome Township is a township in Polk County, Minnesota, United States. It is part of the Grand Forks- ND- MN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of the township was 185 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated community of Eldred is located within Roome Township. Roome Township was organized in 1879. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.1 square miles (93.4 km), all land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 185 people, 66 households, and 52 families residing in the township. The population density was 5.1 people per square mile (2.0/km). There were 69 housing units at an average density of 1.9/sq mi (0.7/km). The racial makeup of the township was 100.00% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.08% of the population. Edward Roome
Edward Roome (died 1729) was an English lawyer, known as one of the writers of the comic opera ''The Jovial Crew''. Roome was the son of an undertaker for funerals in Fleet Street in London, and was brought up to the law. In October 1728 Roome succeeded Philip Horneck as Solicitor to the Treasury. He died on 10 December 1729. Roome and Alexander Pope Alexander Pope refers to him in ''The Dunciad''. A commentator remarked that Roome wrote "some of the papers called Pasquin, where by malicious innuendos he endeavoured to represent opeguilty of malevolent practices with a great man ( Francis Atterbury), then under prosecution of parliament"; Pope retaliated in ''The Dunciad'' by associating "Roome's funereal frown" with the "tremendous brow" of William Popple and the "fierce eye" of Philip Horneck. Major-General Sir Horace Eckford Roome (17 May 1887 - 29 June 1964) was an officer of the Royal Engineers. He was commissioned into the Royal Engineers from the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich on 18 December 1907. During the First World War he was awarded the Military Cross in 1916 for 'distinguished service in the field in Mesopotamia' and was Mentioned in Despatches. During World War II he was appointed Brigadier and Chief Engineer India from 1 August 1939 to 20 November 1941. He was promoted acting Major-General 21 November 1941, temporary Major-General 21 November 1942, and finally substantive Major-General 8 May 1944 (with seniority 25 September 1941). He was Engineer-in-Chief, General Headquarters, India in 1945. He was awarded CBE in 1941 and the CB in 1944. He was knighted KCIE in 1946.
