Referral Chain
A referral hotel chain is a type of hotel franchise. It is a type of hotel that operates independently but maintains affiliation with a given chain. To stay within the chain, the hotel must meet certain minimum criteria. History The referral chain in lodging began in the early 1930s, promoting the cabins and tourist courts which were the predecessors to the standardised motel architecture of the 1950s. Often, motel owners would organize "referral chains" in which each member lodge would voluntarily meet a set of standards and each property would promote the others. Each property would display the group's name alongside its own; a printed directory of all member locations would generally be freely distributed at each member hotel or motel. A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging on a short-term basis. A motel, also known as a motor hotel, motor inn or motor lodge, is a hotel designed for motorists, usually having each room entered directly from the parking area for motor vehicles rather than through a central lobby. Entering dictionaries after World War II, the word ''motel'', coined as a portmanteau of "motor hotel", originates from the Milestone Mo-Tel of San Luis Obispo, California (now called the Motel Inn of San Luis Obispo), which was built in 1925. Imperial 400
Imperial 400 was an American motel chain. It was founded in 1959 by Bernard Whitney in Los Angeles, California. Its properties were typically two-story buildings with "gull wing" shaped roofs over the lobby. It was a limited-service hotel chain, competing mainly with Travelodge. In 1965, Imperial 400 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Its headquarters were moved to Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and again to Arlington, Virginia. By the 1980s, the chain was sold to Interpart S.A., a Luxembourg-based company, and was later dissolved. Imperial 400 structures still exist but usually rundown motels, with exception of a few. Budget Host is an American lodging chain. It was founded in 1975 in Fort Worth, Texas by Ray Sawyer and Ed Semmler.
