Representation Theory Of Sl 2
In mathematics, the special linear Lie algebra of order n (denoted \mathfrak_n(F) or \mathfrak(n, F)) is the Lie algebra of n \times n matrices with trace zero and with the Lie bracket ,Y=XY-YX. This algebra is well studied and understood, and is often used as a model for the study of other Lie algebras. The Lie group that it generates is the special linear group. Applications The Lie algebra \mathfrak_2(\mathbb) is central to the study of special relativity, general relativity and supersymmetry: its fundamental representation is the so-called spinor representation, while its adjoint representation generates the Lorentz group SO(3,1) of special relativity. The algebra \mathfrak_2(\mathbb) plays an important role in the study of chaos and fractals, as it generates the Möbius group SL(2,R), which describes the automorphisms of the hyperbolic plane, the simplest Riemann surface of negative curvature; by contrast, SL(2,C) describes the automorphisms of the hyperbolic 3-dimensional ...

Mathematics
Mathematics is an area of knowledge that includes the topics of numbers, formulas and related structures, shapes and the spaces in which they are contained, and quantities and their changes. These topics are represented in modern mathematics with the major subdisciplines of number theory, algebra, geometry, and analysis, respectively. There is no general consensus among mathematicians about a common definition for their academic discipline. Most mathematical activity involves the discovery of properties of abstract objects and the use of pure reason to prove them. These objects consist of either abstractions from nature orin modern mathematicsentities that are stipulated to have certain properties, called axioms. A ''proof'' consists of a succession of applications of deductive rules to already established results. These results include previously proved theorems, axioms, andin case of abstraction from naturesome basic properties that are considered true starting points of ...

Hyperbolic Geometry
In mathematics, hyperbolic geometry (also called Lobachevskian geometry or Bolyai– Lobachevskian geometry) is a non-Euclidean geometry. The parallel postulate of Euclidean geometry is replaced with: :For any given line ''R'' and point ''P'' not on ''R'', in the plane containing both line ''R'' and point ''P'' there are at least two distinct lines through ''P'' that do not intersect ''R''. (Compare the above with Playfair's axiom, the modern version of Euclid's parallel postulate.) Hyperbolic plane geometry is also the geometry of pseudospherical surfaces, surfaces with a constant negative Gaussian curvature. Saddle surfaces have negative Gaussian curvature in at least some regions, where they locally resemble the hyperbolic plane. A modern use of hyperbolic geometry is in the theory of special relativity, particularly the Minkowski model. When geometers first realised they were working with something other than the standard Euclidean geometry, they described their geomet ...

Finite Coxeter Group
In mathematics, a Coxeter group, named after H. S. M. Coxeter, is an abstract group that admits a formal description in terms of reflections (or kaleidoscopic mirrors). Indeed, the finite Coxeter groups are precisely the finite Euclidean reflection groups; the symmetry groups of regular polyhedra are an example. However, not all Coxeter groups are finite, and not all can be described in terms of symmetries and Euclidean reflections. Coxeter groups were introduced in 1934 as abstractions of reflection groups , and finite Coxeter groups were classified in 1935 . Coxeter groups find applications in many areas of mathematics. Examples of finite Coxeter groups include the symmetry groups of regular polytopes, and the Weyl groups of simple Lie algebras. Examples of infinite Coxeter groups include the triangle groups corresponding to regular tessellations of the Euclidean plane and the hyperbolic plane, and the Weyl groups of infinite-dimensional Kac–Moody algebras. Standard re ...

Tensor Product Of Representations
In mathematics, the tensor product of representations is a tensor product of vector spaces underlying representations together with the factor-wise group action on the product. This construction, together with the Clebsch–Gordan procedure, can be used to generate additional irreducible representations if one already knows a few. Definition Group representations If V_1, V_2 are linear representations of a group G, then their tensor product is the tensor product of vector spaces V_1 \otimes V_2 with the linear action of G uniquely determined by the condition that :g \cdot (v_1 \otimes v_2) = (g\cdot v_1) \otimes (g\cdot v_2) for all v_1\in V_1 and v_2\in V_2. Although not every element of V_1\otimes V_2 is expressible in the form v_1\otimes v_2, the universal property of the tensor product operation guarantees that this action is well defined. In the language of homomorphisms, if the actions of G on V_1 and V_2 are given by homomorphisms \Pi_1:G\rightarrow\operatorname(V_1) and \P ...

Theorem Of The Highest Weight
In representation theory, a branch of mathematics, the theorem of the highest weight classifies the irreducible representations of a complex semisimple Lie algebra \mathfrak g. Theorems 9.4 and 9.5 There is a closely related theorem classifying the irreducible representations of a connected compact Lie group K. Theorem 12.6 The theorem states that there is a bijection :\lambda \mapsto ^\lambda/math> from the set of "dominant integral elements" to the set of equivalence classes of irreducible representations of \mathfrak g or K. The difference between the two results is in the precise notion of "integral" in the definition of a dominant integral element. If K is simply connected, this distinction disappears. The theorem was originally proved by Élie Cartan in his 1913 paper. The version of the theorem for a compact Lie group is due to Hermann Weyl. The theorem is one of the key pieces of representation theory of semisimple Lie algebras. Statement Lie algebra case Let \mathfrak ...

Cartan Algebra
In mathematics, a Cartan subalgebra, often abbreviated as CSA, is a nilpotent subalgebra \mathfrak of a Lie algebra \mathfrak that is self-normalising (if ,Y\in \mathfrak for all X \in \mathfrak, then Y \in \mathfrak). They were introduced by Élie Cartan in his doctoral thesis. It controls the representation theory of a semi-simple Lie algebra \mathfrak over a field of characteristic 0 . In a finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero (e.g., a Cartan subalgebra is the same thing as a maximal abelian subalgebra consisting of elements ''x'' such that the adjoint endomorphism \operatorname(x) : \mathfrak \to \mathfrak is semisimple (i.e., diagonalizable). Sometimes this characterization is simply taken as the definition of a Cartan subalgebra.pg 231 In general, a subalgebra is called toral if it consists of semisimple elements. Over an algebraically closed field, a toral subalgebra is automatically abelian. Thus, over ...

Representation Of A Lie Algebra
In the mathematical field of representation theory, a Lie algebra representation or representation of a Lie algebra is a way of writing a Lie algebra as a set of matrices (or endomorphisms of a vector space) in such a way that the Lie bracket is given by the commutator. In the language of physics, one looks for a vector space V together with a collection of operators on V satisfying some fixed set of commutation relations, such as the relations satisfied by the angular momentum operators. The notion is closely related to that of a representation of a Lie group. Roughly speaking, the representations of Lie algebras are the differentiated form of representations of Lie groups, while the representations of the universal cover of a Lie group are the integrated form of the representations of its Lie algebra. In the study of representations of a Lie algebra, a particular ring, called the universal enveloping algebra, associated with the Lie algebra plays an important role. The universal ...
