Protocol Engineering
Protocol engineering is the application of systematic methods to the development of communication protocols. It uses many of the principles of software engineering, but it is specific to the development of distributed systems. A communication protocol is a system of rules that allows two or more entities of a communications system to transmit information via any variation of a physical quantity.
