Postal addresses in Taiwan (Republic of China) use the East Asian addressing system. When written in Chinese, addresses start from the largest administrative unit and continue to the smallest, although in English the order is often reversed. Format Addresses start with a postal code, followed by administrative divisions in the following order: # Municipality (市 shì) or county (縣 xiàn) # City district (區 qū), urban township (鎮 zhèn) or rural township (鄉 xiāng) # Urban village (里 lǐ) or rural village (村 cūn) # Neighborhood (鄰 lín) Villages and neighborhoods are optional. East Asian Addressing System
East or Orient is one of the four cardinal directions or points of the compass. It is the opposite direction from west and is the direction from which the Sun rises on the Earth. The Republic of China (Taiwan) is divided into multi-layered statutory subdivisions. Due to the complex political status of Taiwan, there is a significant difference in the ''de jure'' system set out in the original constitution and the ''de facto'' system in use today. Constitutionally, the ROC is divided into two and six special municipalities, with each province subdivided into cities and counties. The provinces have been "streamlined" and are no longer functional. Chunghwa Post Co., Ltd. is the official postal service of Taiwan (officially the Republic of China). Chunghwa Post was a government agency of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications until 2003, when it was reorganized into a government-owned corporation. Its affiliation with the Universal Postal Union began in 1914, but ended in 1972 when it was replaced by China Post shortly after China's seat in the United Nations was handed over to the People's Republic of China. International reply coupons are not available to Taiwan, and mail is not delivered to or sent directly from Taiwan, but rather routed through third-party countries, with Japan Post as a major route facility for incoming mail sent from the Americas region. Postal codes () in Taiwan is a system of three + three digits used by Chunghwa Post. There are 368 sets of three-digit codes for townships, county-administered cities, and districts in Taiwan. The cities of Chiayi and Hsinchu have a single code covering all their districts. The uninhabited islands Pratas (Dongsha) and Spratly (Nansha) each have a single code. The uninhabited Senkaku Islands (Diaoyutai) (administered by Japan) have a code, but there are no deliveries. Omitting the supplementary three digits is ordinarily acceptable, but using a six-digit code will speed the delivery of the mail.
