Post-black Art
Post-black art is a category of contemporary African American art. It is a paradoxical genre of art where race and racism are intertwined in a way that rejects their interaction. I.e., it is art about the black experience that attempts to dispel the notion that race matters. It uses enigmatic themes wherein black can substitute for white. Some suggest the term is attributable to the 1995 book ''The End of Blackness'' by Debra Dickerson. However, Thelma Golden claimed to have coined the term ‘post-black’ art with friend and artist Glenn Ligon in the late 1990s.Thelma Golden, ''Freestyle'', exhibition catalogue. Rashid Johnson
Rashid Johnson (born 1977) is an American artist who produces conceptual post-black art. Johnson first received critical attention in 2001 at the age of 24, when his work was included in '' Freestyle'' (2001) curated by Thelma Golden at the Studio Museum in Harlem. He studied at Columbia College Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his work has been exhibited around the world. Johnson is known for several bodies of work in different media, including photographic works; airbrush paintings on mirrored tile; his "Bruise Paintings" and "Surrender Paintings" series, . In addition to photography, Johnson makes audio installations, video, and sculpture. Mark Bradford (born November 20, 1961) is an American visual artist. Born in Los Angeles, Bradford studied at the California Institute of the Arts. Recognized for his collaged painting works, which have been shown internationally, his practice also encompasses video, print, and installation. Arnold Kemp
Arnold J. Kemp is an American artist who works in painting, print, sculpture, and poetry. Kemp received a BA/BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and an MFA from Stanford University. From 1991 to 2005, Kemp lived and worked in San Francisco, CA, where he showed works independently and was a curator at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Deborah Grant (born 1968) is a Canadian-born African-American artist noted for her work in painting and collage, particularly for her series "Random Select". She lives and works in Harlem, New York. Early life and education Grant was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1968, and spent the first four years of her life in Canada. She was raised Catholic and on occasion created Catholic shrines in the abandoned lots of Brooklyn with her brother. Susan Smith-Pinelo is an African-American artist noted for her work in video and performance. She lives and works in Washington, DC. Education Smith-Pinelo received a B.F.A. from Oberlin College in 1991. She received a M.F.A. from Columbia University in 2000. Work Susan Smith-Pinelo's work challenges conceptions of black identity and gender in rap music, and is particularly concerned with questioning the misogyny of the genre.
