Party-state Capitalism
Party-state capitalism ( zh, t=黨國資本主義, s=党国资本主义) is a term used by some economists and sociologists to describe the contemporary economy of China under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The term has also been used to describe the economy of Taiwan under the authoritarian military dictatorship, military government of the Kuomintang (KMT). The term is not used by the Kuomintang itself; it was coined by Taiwanese economists such as Chen Shih-meng and Cyrus Chu, in their research report ''Deconstructing the KMT-State Capitalism'' (). Margaret Pearson, Meg Rithmire, and Kellee S. Tsai proposed to use the term “party-state capitalism” to conceptualize the political-economic dynamics of China since the late 2000s. Chinese Communist Party
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), officially the Communist Party of China (CPC), is the founding and One-party state, sole ruling party of the China, People's Republic of China (PRC). Under the leadership of Mao Zedong, the CCP emerged victorious in the Chinese Civil War against the Kuomintang, and, in 1949, Mao Proclamation of the People's Republic of China, proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Since then, the CCP has governed China with List of political parties in China, eight smaller parties within its United Front (China), United Front and has sole control over the People's Liberation Army (PLA). ''Current History'' is the oldest extant United States-based publication devoted exclusively to contemporary world affairs. International security, also called global security is a term which refers to the measures taken by states and international organizations, such as the United Nations, European Union, and others, to ensure mutual survival and safety. A military dictatorship is a dictatorship in which the military exerts complete or substantial control over political authority, and the dictator is often a high-ranked military officer. Kuomintang
The Kuomintang (KMT), also referred to as the Guomindang (GMD), the Nationalist Party of China (NPC) or the Chinese Nationalist Party (CNP), is a major political party in the Republic of China, initially on the Chinese mainland and in Taiwan after 1949. It was the sole party in China during the Republican Era from 1928 to 1949, when most of the Chinese mainland was under its control. The party retreated from the mainland to Taiwan on 7 December 1949, following its defeat in the Chinese Civil War. Chen Shih-meng
Chen Shih-meng (; born 4 August 1948) is a Taiwanese economics scholar and politician. Chen supported the independence of Taiwan. Biography Chen was born in Maryland, United States, on August 4, 1948, to , a Taiwanese agronomist. His grandfather, , was an official in the Nationalist government. In 1970 he graduated from National Taiwan University, majoring in economics. He earned his Doctor of Economics from Ohio State University in 1978. Chen joined the Kuomintang in 1966 and quit the party in 1991, to join the Democratic Progressive Party. In 1992, Chen joined the Goa-Seng-Lang Association For Taiwan Independence. He was Secretary General of the Democratic Progressive Party in February 1992, and held that office until September 1992. Chen once served as Vice-Mayor of Taipei, while Chen Shui-bian was its Mayor. C. Y. Cyrus Chu (; born 29 October 1955) is a Taiwanese economist and politician. He holds a Bachelor of Law (Department of Business) from National Taiwan University (1978) and PhD in economics from the University of Michigan (1985). He joined the Department of Business Administration and Economics at National Taiwan University thereafter and was promoted to Professor in 1989. He has published 2 monographs on demography and family economics, respectively, both published by Oxford University Press, and more than 100 professional articles in journals including American Economic Review and Journal of Political Economy. Dang Guo
''Dang Guo'' ( zh, t=黨國, p=Dǎngguó, l=party-state) was the one-party system adopted by the Republic of China under the Kuomintang. It was from 1924 onwards, after Sun Yat-sen acknowledged the efficacy of the nascent Soviet Union's political system (notably governance under a dictatorship). Chiang Kai-shek later used the Kuomintang to control and operate the National Government of the Republic of China (ROC) and the National Revolutionary Army. All of the major national policies of the government bureaucracy were formulated by the Kuomintang, resulting in the party holding the supreme power of the whole nation. Crony Capitalism
Crony capitalism, sometimes called cronyism, is an economic system in which businesses thrive not as a result of free enterprise, but rather as a return on money amassed through collusion between a business class and the political class. This is often achieved by the manipulation of relationships with state power by business interests rather than unfettered competition in obtaining permits, government grants, tax breaks, or other forms of state intervention over resources where business interests exercise undue influence over the state's deployment of public goods, for example, mining concessions for primary commodities or contracts for public works. Money is then made not merely by making a profit in the market, but through profiteering by rent seeking using this monopoly or oligopoly.
