Ocean Pout
The ocean pout (''Zoarces americanus'') is an eelpout in the family Zoarcidae. It is found in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of New England and eastern Canada. The fish has antifreeze proteins in its blood, giving it the ability to survive in near-freezing waters. Taxonomy The ocean pout was first formally described in 1801 by the German naturalists Marcus Elieser Bloch and Johann Gottlob Theaenus Schneider with its type locality given as "American seas". It is one of six species in the genus ''Zoarces'', the only genus in the subfamily Zoarcinae which is one of four subfamilies in the eelpout family Zoarcidae. Description The ocean pout has an elongated, tapering body with a wide mouth with fleshy lips, the upper lip protruding further than the lower. Woods Hole Science Aquarium
The Woods Hole Science Aquarium (WHSA) is a small public aquarium in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, United States. It is owned by the US government and operated by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Marine Biological Laboratory. History The Woods Hole Science Aquarium claims to be the oldest aquarium in the US. In 1873 or 1875, US Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries Spencer Fullerton Baird invited the public to his laboratory in Woods Hole to see animals and learn about marine science. In 1885, the US government built the first marine research building in Woods Hole, and Baird arranged for the first floor to house a public aquarium that displayed fish, invertebrates, and birds. Baird's exhibit also inspired the creation of the National Aquarium in Washington, D.C. in 1878. Zoarces
''Zoarces'' is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Zoarcidae, the eelpouts. It is the only genus in the subfamily Zoarcinae. These eelpouts are found in the northern Atlantic and northern Pacific Oceans. Taxonomy ''Zoarces'' was first proposed as a genus in 1829 by the French zoologist Georges Cuvier. Sand dollars (also known as a sea cookie or snapper biscuit in New Zealand, or pansy shell in South Africa) are species of flat, burrowing sea urchins belonging to the order Clypeasteroida. Some species within the order, not quite as flat, are known as '' sea biscuits''. Sand dollars can also be called "sand cakes" or "cake urchins".
