Old Supreme Court Building, Singapore
The Old Supreme Court Building ( ms, Bangunan Mahkamah Agung Lama, ) is the former courthouse of the Supreme Court of Singapore, before it moved out of the building and commenced operations in the Supreme Court, Singapore, new building on 20 June 2005. The building was the last structure in the style of classical architecture to be built in Singapore in the Straits Settlements, the former British colony. The building, together with the City Hall, Singapore, City Hall, has been converted into National Gallery Singapore which was opened in 2015. History On 1 April 1937, the original foundation stone of the Old Supreme Court Building, (then the biggest foundation stone in the whole of British Malaya, Malaya) was laid by the Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Shenton Thomas, Shenton Whitelegge Thomas. City Hall MRT Station
City Hall MRT station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station on the North South Line (NSL) and East West Line (EWL). Situated in the Downtown Core district of Singapore, it is underneath Stamford Road near the road junctions with North Bridge Road and St Andrew's Road. The station is near landmarks such as the City Hall, Raffles City, the Padang, St Andrew's Cathedral and The Cenotaph. Initially named St Andrew's MRT station, the station was part of the early plans for the original MRT network since 1982. Construction of the tunnels between the City Hall and Raffles Place stations required the draining of the Singapore River. The station opened on 12 December 1987 with the MRT extension to Outram Park station. The Padang (Malay for 'field') is an open playing field located within the Downtown Core of the Central Area in Singapore. It includes the Padang Cricket Ground. The Padang is surrounded by several important landmarks, which include Saint Andrew's Cathedral, City Hall, the Old Supreme Court Building and the City Hall MRT station. Percy McElwaine
Sir Percy Alexander McElwaine KC (21 September 1884 – 24 October 1969) was a lawyer and judge who served, ''inter alia'', as Attorney General of Fiji and Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements. Early life McElwaine was born in Roscommon, Ireland, and was educated at Campbell College in Belfast and at Trinity College Dublin. He was admitted to the Irish bar in 1908 and the Alberta bar in 1913. In the First World War, he was a temporary lieutenant in the Fourteenth Royal Irish Rifles. Marriages McElwaine married Evelyn Annie Forsaith Macnaught at St Mary Le Park in Battersea, London, on 17 June 1914. She died in the 1918 influenza epidemic on 10 November 1918. She was pregnant at the time of her death. His second wife, Margaret, was a popular socialite during their time in Singapore. They had two sons, David Eric and Ian Douglas. Straits Settlements
The Straits Settlements were a group of British territories located in Southeast Asia. Headquartered in Singapore for more than a century, it was originally established in 1826 as part of the territories controlled by the British East India Company, the Straits Settlements came under British Raj control in 1858 and then under direct British control as a Crown colony on 1 April 1867. In 1946, following the end of the Second World War and the Japanese occupation, the colony was dissolved as part of Britain's reorganisation of its Southeast Asian dependencies in the area. Shenton Thomas
Sir Thomas Shenton Whitelegge Thomas (10 October 1879 – 15 January 1962), commonly known as Sir Shenton Thomas, was a British colonial administrator most notable for his role as Governor of the Straits Settlements in Singapore. He served from 9 November 1934 to 15 February 1942, during which time the Second World War broke out, and again from 12 September 1945 to 31 March 1946, when the Straits Settlements was dissolved and Singapore became a crown colony. He was a prisoner-of-war (POW) during the Japanese occupation of Singapore, having decided to stay in Singapore during the war.
