Old Supreme Court Building, Singapore
The Former Supreme Court Building (, ) is the former courthouse of the Supreme Court of Singapore. The court moved to a Supreme Court, Singapore, new building, where it began operations on 20 June 2005. Opened in 1939, former courthouse was the last structure built in the style of classical architecture in Singapore in the Straits Settlements, the former British colony. Together with the Former City Hall, Singapore, Former City Hall, the former courthouse has been converted for use as National Gallery Singapore; the complex opened in 2015. History On 1 April 1937, Sir Shenton Thomas, Shenton Whitelegge Thomas, Governor of the Straits Settlements laid the original foundation stone of the Supreme Court Building. (At the time it was the largest foundation stone in the whole of British Malaya, Malaya.) Shenton Thomas
Sir Thomas Shenton Whitelegge Thomas (10 October 1879 – 15 January 1962) was a British colonial administrator, best remembered as the Governor of the Straits Settlements at the time of the Japanese invasion during the Second World War. Born in England, Thomas spent the majority of his early career in the Colonial Service in Africa, rising to become Governor of Nyasaland and of the Gold Coast. He was appointed to the Straits Settlements in 1934, serving as Governor until 1942, when he became a Japanese prisoner-of-war after the fall of Singapore. City Hall MRT station is an underground Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (Singapore), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station on the North South MRT line, North–South line (NSL) and East West MRT line, East–West line (EWL). Percy McElwaine
Sir Percy Alexander McElwaine KC (21 September 1884 – 24 October 1969) was a lawyer and judge who served, ''inter alia'', as Attorney General of Fiji and Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements. Early life McElwaine was born in Roscommon, Ireland, and was educated at Campbell College in Belfast and at Trinity College Dublin. He was admitted to the Irish bar in 1908 and the Alberta bar in 1913. In the First World War, he was a temporary lieutenant in the Fourteenth Royal Irish Rifles. Marriages McElwaine married Evelyn Annie Forsaith Macnaught at St Mary Le Park in Battersea, London, on 17 June 1914. She died in the 1918 influenza epidemic on 10 November 1918. She was pregnant at the time of her death. His second wife, Margaret, was a popular socialite during their time in Singapore. They had two sons, David Eric and Ian Douglas. Straits Settlements
The Straits Settlements () were a group of British territories located in Southeast Asia. Originally established in 1826 as part of the territories controlled by the British East India Company, the Straits Settlements came under control of the British Raj in 1858 and then under direct British control as a Crown colony in 1867. In 1946, following the end of World War II and the Japanese occupation, the colony was dissolved as part of Britain's reorganisation of its Southeast Asian dependencies in the area. The Straits Settlements originally consisted of the four individual settlements of Penang, Singapore, Malacca, and Dinding. Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands were added in 1886. The island of Labuan, off the coast of Borneo, was also incorporated into the colony with effect from 1 January 1907, becoming a separate settlement within it in 1912.
