Nomination Contest
A nomination contest, in Canadian politics, is the process by which a political party chooses their candidate for the next general election. Each nomination contest is held by the party's local riding association. On occasion, a political party's head office may bypass the nomination contest and directly appoint its preferred candidate. This tends to be controversial, however. Nomination contests are most commonly held during the three to six months immediately preceding an election call, or in the first week of an election campaign. An electoral district in Canada is a geographical constituency upon which Canada's representative democracy is based. It is officially known in Canadian French as a ''circonscription'' but frequently called a ''comté'' (county). In English it is also colloquially and more commonly known as a Riding (division), riding or constituency. Primary Election
Primary elections, or direct primary are a voting process by which voters can indicate their preference for their party's candidate, or a candidate in general, in an upcoming general election, local election, or by-election. Depending on the country and administrative divisions within the country, voters might consist of the general public in what is called an open primary, or solely the members of a political party in what is called a closed primary. In addition to these, there are other variants on primaries (which are discussed below) that are used by many countries holding elections throughout the world. The origins of primary elections can be traced to the progressive movement in the United States, which aimed to take the power of candidate nomination from party leaders to the people.
