Navicelli
Navicelli are small sized (15-meter) Tuscan boats that transported goods. The boats are flat with rounded sizes and a load capacity of 25 tonnes. The boatmen who rode the navicelli were called "navicellai". Every 25th June until the year 1250, navicellai competed in a regatta starting from San Jacopo sopr'Arno. The Italian boat manufacturer Picchittio started out as a navicelli builder back in 1575. Benetti is another yacht manufacturer that started out in the second half of the 19th century by building navicelli boats among other things. Navicelli Channel
The Navicelli Channel is a channel built between 1563 and 1575 to connect Pisa with the port of Livorno. The name originates from the so-called '' navicelli'', small sized Tuscan boats that transported goods on the channel across the Pisan plain from Lake Bientina to the area of Empoli. History In the 16th century, the mouth of the Arno river was a wetland affected by strong sea currents. For this reason, and because of a need to connect the new port of Livorno to the Tuscan capital of Florence, a channel was designed and built between the seaport and Pisa during the reign of Cosimo I de'Medici. The excavation cost only 5,000 shields. The channel was opened to river traffic in 1603 and had a length of 22 km, 18 m width and a depth of 1.5 m. San Jacopo Sopr'Arno
San Jacopo sopr'Arno is a church in Florence, Italy. The church was built in the 10th–11th centuries in Romanesque style. It subsequently experienced heavy modifications including the addition of a triple-arched portico. According to the Renaissance art historian Giorgio Vasari, Filippo Brunelleschi built here a chapel, the Ridolfi Chapel, in which he studied, in smaller scale, architectural elements later used in his famous dome of Santa Maria del Fiore. The chapel is now destroyed. Since 1542 it was held by Franciscans of the Minorite Order. The entrance portico was remade by order of Cosimo I de' Medici in 1580, using the architect Bernardino Radi. The bell tower was designed by Gherardo Silvani in 1660. The church was damaged when the Arno River flooded Florence in 1966. Repairs of the church after flood led to the restoration of some of the historical architectural features, and the discovery of columns belonging to the original Romanesque church in the Baroque interior. ... Benetti is an Italian shipbuilding and boat building company based in Viareggio, Livorno, and Fano, owned by Azimut. Benetti designs and constructs motoryachts, and is one of the leading builders of custom superyachts, having won the ''Showboats International'' magazine "shipyard number 1" award six times in a row, the only yard to have done so. History Founded in 1873, when Lorenzo Benetti (1844–1914), bought the Darsena Luca shipyard to found the Benetti shipyard. Riverboats
A riverboat is a watercraft designed for inland navigation on lakes, rivers, and artificial waterways.
