Native XML Database
An XML database is a data persistence software system that allows data to be specified, and sometimes stored, in XML format. This data can be queried, transformed, exported and returned to a calling system. XML databases are a flavor of document-oriented databases which are in turn a category of NoSQL database. Rationale for XML in databases There are a number of reasons to directly specify data in XML or other document formats such as JSON. For XML in particular, they include: * An enterprise may have a lot of XML in an existing standard format * Data may need to be exposed or ingested as XML, so using another format such as relational forces double-modeling of the data * XML is very well suited to sparse data, deeply nested data and mixed content (such as text with embedded markup tags) * XML is human readable whereas relational tables require expertise to access * Metadata is often available as XML * Semantic web data is available as RDF/XML * Provides a solution for Objec ... Data Persistence
In computing, a persistent data structure or not ephemeral data structure is a data structure that always preserves the previous version of itself when it is modified. Such data structures are effectively immutable, as their operations do not (visibly) update the structure in-place, but instead always yield a new updated structure. The term was introduced in Driscoll, Sarnak, Sleator, and Tarjans' 1986 article. A data structure is partially persistent if all versions can be accessed but only the newest version can be modified. The data structure is fully persistent if every version can be both accessed and modified. If there is also a meld or merge operation that can create a new version from two previous versions, the data structure is called confluently persistent. Structures that are not persistent are called ''ephemeral''. These types of data structures are particularly common in logical and functional programming, as languages in those paradigms discourage (or fully forbid) ... Relational Database
A relational database is a (most commonly digital) database based on the relational model of data, as proposed by E. F. Codd in 1970. A system used to maintain relational databases is a relational database management system (RDBMS). Many relational database systems are equipped with the option of using the SQL (Structured Query Language) for querying and maintaining the database. History The term "relational database" was first defined by E. F. Codd at IBM in 1970. Codd introduced the term in his research paper "A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks". In this paper and later papers, he defined what he meant by "relational". One well-known definition of what constitutes a relational database system is composed of Codd's 12 rules. However, no commercial implementations of the relational model conform to all of Codd's rules, so the term has gradually come to describe a broader class of database systems, which at a minimum: # Present the data to the user as relati ... Data Management
Data management comprises all disciplines related to handling data as a valuable resource. Concept The concept of data management arose in the 1980s as technology moved from sequential processing (first punched cards, then magnetic tape) to random access storage. Since it was now possible to store a discrete fact and quickly access it using random access disk technology, those suggesting that data management was more important than business process management used arguments such as "a customer's home address is stored in 75 (or some other large number) places in our computer systems." However, during this period, random access processing was not competitively fast, so those suggesting "process management" was more important than "data management" used batch processing time as their primary argument. As application software evolved into real-time, interactive usage, it became obvious that both management processes were important. If the data was not well defined, the data wo ... DB-Engines Ranking
The DB-Engines Ranking ranks database management systems by popularity, covering over 380 systems. The ranking criteria include number of search engine results when searching for the system names, Google Trends, Stack Overflow discussions, job offers with mentions of the systems, number of profiles in professional networks such as LinkedIn, mentions in social networks such as Twitter. The ranking is updated monthly. It has been described and cited in various database-related articles. By grouping over specific database features like database model or type of license, regularly published statistics reveal historical trends which are used in strategic statements. History The DB-Engines DBMS portal was created in 2012 and is maintained by the Austrian consulting company Solid IT. Based on its ranking, DB-Engines grants a yearly award for the system that gained most in popularity within a year. The award winners are: * 2013 - MongoDB * 2014 - MongoDB * 2015 - Oracle * 2016 - Micros ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

XQuery API For Java
XQuery API for Java (XQJ) refers to the common Java API for the W3C XQuery 1.0 specification. The XQJ API enables Java programmers to execute XQuery against an XML data source (e.g. an XML database) while reducing or eliminating Vendor lock-in, vendor lock in. The XQJ API provides Java developers with an interface to the XQuery Data Model. Its design is similar to the Java Database Connectivity, JDBC API which has a client/server feel and as such lends itself well to Server-based XML database, XML Databases and less well to client-side XQuery processors, although the "Database connection, connection" part is a very minor part of the entire API. Users of the XQJ API can bind Java (programming language), Java values to XQuery expressions, preventing Code injection, code injection attacks. Also, multiple XQuery expressions can be executed as part of an atomic transaction. History and implementation The XQuery API for Java was developed at the Java Community Process as Java Spec ... Sedna (database)
Sedna is an open-source database management system that provides native storage for XML data. The distinctive design decisions employed in Sedna are (i) schema-based clustering storage strategy for XML data and (ii) memory management based on layered address space.Ilya Taranov et al. Sedna: native XML database management system (internals overview). In ACM SIGMOD '10: Proceedings of the 36th international conference on Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Management of Data, pages 1037-1045, New York, NY, USA, 2010. ACM. Data organization Data organization in Sedna is designed with the goal of providing a balance in performance between XML queries and updates execution. The two primary design decisions in data organization in Sedna are: # ''Direct'' pointers are used to represent XML node relationships such as parent, child, and sibling ones. Unlike relational-based approaches that require performing joins for traversing an XML document, traversi ... XSLT
XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) is a language originally designed for transforming XML documents into other XML documents, or other formats such as HTML for web pages, plain text or XSL Formatting Objects, which may subsequently be converted to other formats, such as PDF, PostScript and PNG. Support for JSON and plain-text transformation was added in later updates to the XSLT 1.0 specification. As of August 2022, the most recent stable version of the language is XSLT 3.0, which achieved Recommendation status in June 2017. XSLT 3.0 implementations support Java, .NET, C/C++, Python, PHP and NodeJS. An XSLT 3.0 Javascript library can also be hosted within the Web Browser. Modern web browsers also include native support for XSLT 1.0. For an XSLT document transformation, the original document is not changed; rather, a new document is created based on the content of an existing one. Typically, input documents are XML files, but anything from which the processo ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
