Municipalities Of Uruguay
The Uruguayan departments are subdivided into municipalities and, as of 2022, there are 125 municipalities. This second level administrative division system was created by Law No. 18567 of 13 September 2009 and the first municipalities were created (or converted from Local Boards in the previous system) in March 2010. In the municipal elections of 2010 municipal authorities were elected for the first time and they assumed office months later. Each municipality is governed by a local council, made up of 5 members. The chairperson of the local council is known as ''alcalde'' (mayor) and the remaining members are the ''councilors''. Uruguay consists of 19 departments (''departamentos''). Each department has a legislature called a Departmental Board. The ''Intendente'' is the department's chief executive. History The first division of the Republic into six departments occurred on 27 January 1816. In February of the same year, two more departments were formed, and in 1828 one more was added. The Departamento de Canelones ( es, Departamento de Canelones; ) is one of the 19 uruguayan departments. With an area of and 518,154 inhabitants, it is located in the south of Uruguay. Its capital is Canelones. Geography and climate Neighbouring departments are Maldonado and Lavalleja to the East, Florida to the North, San José to the West, and Montevideo to the South. Part of the southern border is formed by the Río de la Plata. It is the second smallest department of the country after that of Montevideo, but the second largest in population. Canelones, Uruguay
Canelones () is the capital of the department of Canelones in Uruguay. Its name is derived from a species of cinnamon, which is called "canelón", growing along the banks of the homonymous river. Since 2010, the city is also the seat of the municipality of Canelones. Location The city is located on Route 5 about North of Montevideo and on its intersection with Route 64. It lies on the west bank of the river Arroyo Canelón Chico. History It was founded on 24 April 1783 under the name "Villa Guadalupe". It became capital of one of the nine earlier Departments of the Republic. The railroad arrived here in 1874, while in 1908 National Route 5 from Montevideo was inaugurated. Juanicó
Juanicó is a small industrial town located 35 km north of Montevideo, within the Canelones Department, Uruguay. Location The town is located just east of Route 5, about south of the city of Canelones. The railroad tracks Montevideo - 25 de Agosto pass through the town. History The town owes its current denomination to Francisco Juanicó, who, in 1830, finished with cattle raising. He then built up a winery who enabled him to produce high-quality wine, mainly due to the favorable conditions of the land.
