Mud Fever
Mud fever, also known as scratches or pastern dermatitis, is a group of diseases of horses causing irritation and dermatitis in the lower limbs of horses. Often caused by a mixture of bacteria, typically ''Dermatophilus congolensis'' and ''Staphylococcus'' spp., mud fever can also be caused by fungal organisms (dermatophytes). Photosensitization, chorioptic mange mites, contact dermatitis, and other conditions also contribute to some cases. This condition is also known as dew poisoning, grease, grease heel, or greasy heel. Cause Mud fever is caused by an infection of the skin by bacteria, including ''Dermatophilus congolensis'', and often ''Staphylococcus'' spp. Dermatophytes (fungal organisms such as ''Malassezia'' or ''Trichophyton'') can also contribute, as can chorioptic mange mites. ''Dermatophilus congolensis'' is a Gram-positive bacterium and the cause of a disease called dermatophilosis (sometimes called mud fever) in animals and humans, a dermatologic condition that manifests as the formation of crusty scabs containing the microorganism. It has been erroneously called mycotic dermatitis. Rainscald is another condition often seen in animals, which is also caused by ''D. congolensis''. Morphology ''D. congolensis'' is facultative anaerobic actinomycete. It has two morphologic forms - filamentous hyphae and motile zoospores. The hyphae are characterized by branching filaments (1-5 µm in diameter) that ultimately fragment by both transverse and longitudinal separation into packets of coccoid cells. ''Staphylococcus'' is a genus of Gram-positive bacteria in the family Staphylococcaceae from the order Bacillales. Under the microscope, they appear spherical (cocci), and form in grape-like clusters. Dermatophyte (from Greek '' derma'' "skin" (GEN ''dermatos'') and ''phyton'' "plant") is a common label for a group of fungus of ''Arthrodermataceae'' that commonly causes skin disease in animals and humans. Mange is a type of skin disease caused by parasitic mites. Rain scald (also known as dermatophilosis, tufailosis, rain rot or streptothricosis) is a dermatological disease affecting cattle and horses. Once in the skin, the bacterium ''Dermatophilus congolensis'' causes inflammation of the skin as well as the appearance of scabs and lesions.
