A rescue lifeboat is a boat rescue craft which is used to attend a vessel in distress, or its survivors, to rescue crew and passengers. It can be hand pulled, sail powered or powered by an engine. William Hutchinson (privateer)
William Hutchinson (1715 probably in Newcastle upon Tyne, England – February 11, 1801 in Liverpool, England) was an English mariner, privateer, author, and inventor who developed parabolic reflectors for lighthouses and helped establish possibly the world's first lifeboat station. Hutchinson was a seaman by the late 1730s, serving on an East Indiaman trading in India and China. After service in the Royal Navy, he entered the employ of merchant and privateer Fortunatus Wright. Hutchinson was captured by the French in 1746 in the ''Perl'', but by 1748 was master of the ''St. George'', which captured a French ship. A voyage in 1750 as captain of Wright's ''Lowestoft'' ended in shipwreck, and Hutchinson later claimed that only a timely rescue saved him from being eaten by the survivors in his lifeboat, as he had drawn the short straw. HMS Brazen (1798)
HMS ''Brazen'' was the French privateer ''Invincible General Bonaparte'' (or ''Invincible Bonaparte'' or ''Invincible Buonaparte''), which the British captured in 1798. She is best known for her wreck in January 1800 in which all but one of her crew drowned. Capture ''Invincible General Bonaparte'' was a French privateer of 20 guns and 170 men under the command of Jean Pierre Lamothe and under the ownership of Salanche, Bordeaux. The frigate ''Boadicea'' captured her on 9 December 1798. She was sixteen days out of Bordeaux and reportedly had not made any captures. However, a privateer by the same name had taken and burned ''Friendship'', Smith, master, which had been sailing from St Ube's to Falmouth. ''Boadicea'' sent ''Invincible Buonaparte'', of "18 guns and 175 men" into Portsmouth. The prize arrived at Spithead on 18 December and in time the Admiralty decided to purchase her. Newhaven, East Sussex
Newhaven is a port town in East Sussex in England, lying at the mouth of the River Ouse. The town developed during the Middle Ages as the nearby port of Seaford began drying up, forcing a new port to be established. A sheltered harbour was built in the mid-16th century, and a breakwater in the late 18th, to provide continued access to the sea. Newhaven increased in importance following the arrival of the railway in 1847, and regular cross-Channel ferry services to Dieppe. Though these have been reduced in the 21st century, Newhaven still provides regular ferry services and continues to be used as an important freight terminal. Origins Newhaven lies at the mouth of the River Ouse, in the valley the river has cut through the South Downs. Over the centuries the river has migrated between Newhaven and Seaford in response to the growth and decay of a shingle spit (shoal) at its mouth. William Wouldhave (1751–1821) is a rival of Lionel Lukin for recognition as inventor of the lifeboat. Henry Greathead
Henry Francis Greathead (1757–1818) was a pioneering rescue lifeboat builder from South Shields. Although Lionel Lukin had patented a lifeboat in 1785, Greathead successfully petitioned parliament in 1802 with the claim that he had invented a lifeboat in 1790, and he was awarded £1,200 for his trouble. Although his claims have been contested, he did build 31 boats, which saved very many lives, and succeeded in making the concept of a shore-based rescue lifeboat widely accepted. Early life He was born on 27 January 1757 in Richmond, North Yorkshire, but the family moved to South Shields in 1763. His father was well off, having been in public service for 46 years, as an officer of salt duties and later as supervisor and comptroller of the district. A yawl is a type of boat. The term has several meanings. It can apply to the rig (or sailplan), to the hull type or to the use which the vessel is put.
