Mayor Of Croydon
The Mayor of Croydon is a directly elected mayor responsible for the executive function of Croydon London Borough Council. The current mayor is Jason Perry of the Conservative Party, elected in May 2022, and the first holder of the post. Background The Local Government Act 2000 allowed local authorities to change from the leader-and-cabinet system of governance to a directly elected mayor model. The change needs to be established by a referendum, either arranged by the council or triggered by a petition. A campaign group supporting an elected mayor for Croydon called DEMOC started a petition to change to the mayoral system in February 2020, which they submitted to the council in September 2020. The mayoral system would replace the leader-and-cabinet system, whereby the leader of the council is chosen by the majority party or coalition of parties. Jason Perry (politician)
Jason Stephen Perry is a Conservative Party politician who has served as the directly elected Mayor of Croydon, a Borough within London, since 2022. He was previously the Leader of the Opposition of the Croydon London Borough Council and has been Leader of the Croydon Council Conservative Group since September 2020. He has been a councillor on Croydon London Borough Council since 1994, representing Coulsdon East from 1994 to 2002, Croham from 2002 to 2018 and South Croydon since boundary changes in 2018. Val Shawcross
Valerie Shawcross is a British politician who served as Deputy Mayor of London for Transport from 2016 to 2018. A member of the Labour Co-operative parties, she was Member of the London Assembly for Lambeth and Southwark from 2000 to 2016. Shawcross was a Member of Croydon London Borough Council from 1994 to 2000, and served as Leader of the Council from 1997 to 2000. She unsuccessfully stood, as the Labour candidate, to become Mayor of Croydon in 2022. Winston McKenzie
Winston Truman McKenzie (born 23 October 1953) is a British political activist and perennial candidate for public office. He is currently a founder and leader of the Unity in Action Party. He has been a member of every major UK political party, and has stood as an independent or minor party candidate on numerous occasions without success. A British Jamaican, McKenzie worked as a boxer before later running a pub with his brothers; it was closed down after police found many of its customers to possess weapons and drugs. He was a member of the Labour Party from the 1980s until 2001. Andrew Pelling
Andrew John Pelling (born 20 August 1959) is a British politician. First elected as a Conservative he was an independent Member of Parliament for Croydon Central and on 30 March 2010 announced his intention to contest the seat as an Independent at the 2010 general election, but lost the seat to his former party. He was also a member of the London Assembly for Croydon and Sutton and a councillor in Croydon. Pelling later became a member of the Labour Party in February 2011; he was subsequently expelled from Labour in February 2022. 2021 London Mayoral Election
The 2021 London mayoral election was held on 6 May 2021 to elect the mayor of London. It was held simultaneously with elections for the London Assembly, other local elections across England and Wales, and devolved elections in Scotland and Wales. The mayoral and Assembly elections were to be held on 7 May 2020, but in March 2020 the government announced the election would be postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sadiq Khan was re-selected as the Labour candidate in 2018, the Conservative Party selected Shaun Bailey and the Green Party chose Siân Berry. Rory Stewart, a former Conservative MP and minister, ran as an independent before withdrawing due to the delay in the election. Christopher Ian Brian Mynott Philp (born 6 July 1976) is a British politician serving as Minister of State for Crime, Policing and Fire since October 2022. He served as Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General in October 2022. A member of the Conservative Party, he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Croydon South since May 2015. In August 2019, he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid. Luke Anthony Hall (born 8 July 1986) is a British politician and former retail manager who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Thornbury and Yate since 2015. A member of the Conservative Party, he served as Minister of State for Regional Growth and Local Government from 2020 to 2021.
