Masocore
Masocore is a video game subgenre with a focus on intense difficulty, often featuring complex or unfair mechanics. The name is a portmanteau of "masochism" and "hardcore", suggesting that players of the genre are hardcore gamers who find pleasure in the aggravation required to beat the games and the feeling of reward afterwards for having surpassed a seemingly insurmountable challenge. Masocore games are mostly 2D sidescrollers, harkening back to retro Nintendo hard platformers, although the definition can also be taken to encompass fully 3D games of high difficulty such as soulslikes. Concepts Masocore games are mostly platformers, and are specifically designed to frustrate players. Unlike classic games, masocore titles often offer infinite lives, encouraging the player to try over and over again with little friction. Games of the subgenre are popular with speedrunners, who spend thousands of hours mastering the games completely and then compete to be at the top of the leade ...

Celeste (video Game)
''Celeste'' is a 2018 platform game developed and published by indie developer Matt Makes Games. It stars Madeline, a young girl with anxiety and depression who aims to climb Celeste Mountain. During her climb, she encounters several characters, including a personification of her self-doubt known as Badeline, who attempts to stop her from climbing the mountain. Development of ''Celeste'' began in August 2015, when Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry participated in a four-day-long game jam, in which they created ''Celeste'' for the PICO-8. Thorson, who served as the game's producer, and Berry, who served as the lead programmer, wanted to expand the PICO-8 game into a full release. Inspired in part by Thorson's own ''TowerFall'' (2013) and '' Super Mario Bros. 3'' (1988), the gameplay was designed to be minimal, while mirroring Thorson's experiences with bouldering. ''Celeste'' was also designed to be accessible, featuring game mechanics intended to make the game more forgiving in a ...

Video Game Genre
A video game genre is an informal classification of a video game based on how it is played rather than Computer graphics, visual or narrative elements. This is independent of setting (fiction), setting, unlike works of fiction that are expressed through other media, such as films or books. For example, a shooter game is still a shooter game, regardless of where or when it takes place. A specific game's genre is open to subjective interpretation. An individual game may belong to several genres at once. History Early attempts at categorizing video games were primarily for organizing catalogs and books. A 1981 catalog for the Atari 2600, Atari VCS uses 8 headings: Skill Gallery, Space Station, Classics Corner, Adventure Territory, Race Track, Sports Arena, Combat Zone, and Learning Center. ("Classics", in this case, refers to chess and checkers.) In Tom Hirschfeld's 1981 book ''How to Master the Video Games'', he divides the games into broad categories in the table of contents: ''Sp ...

Kaizo
''Kaizo'' (, "kaizō", meaning "modification", "rebuild" or "reconfiguration") is a philosophy of game design, specifically platforming games, distinguished by a high degree of strictness placed upon the player's intended actions and movements through a level. This emphasis on precision, which manifests in the form of extremely-precise character movement (often enforced through subterfuge and purposefully hidden traps), asks the player to use high levels of skill and knowledge of the game's physics and engine in order to accomplish tasks. The philosophy is most closely associated with ROM Hacks of Super Mario World and with custom levels created in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker 2, but has been cited as an influence in other fan-made and original game designs. The term originally came from the Japanese ROM hacking scene, where Kaizo was used as a general term for all modified games. Origin The creation of ROM hacks for ''Super Mario'' games began in 1987 with the re ...

Indie Game
An indie game, short for independent video game, is a video game typically created by individuals or smaller development teams without the financial and technical support of a large game publisher, in contrast to most "AAA" (triple-A) games. However, the "indie" term may apply to other scenarios where the development of the game has some measure of independence from a publisher even if a publisher helps fund and distribute a game, such as creative freedom. Because of their independence and freedom to develop, indie games often focus on innovation, experimental gameplay, and taking risks not usually afforded in AAA games, and may explore the medium to produce unique experiences in art games. Indie games tend to be sold through digital distribution channels rather than at retail due to lack of publisher support. The term is synonymous with that of independent music or independent film in those respective mediums. Indie game development bore out from the same concepts of amateur ...
