The Mayor of Invercargill is the head of the municipal government of Invercargill, New Zealand, and leads the Invercargill City Council. The mayor is directly elected using a First-past-the-post voting, First Past the Post electoral system every 2022 Invercargill mayoral election , three years. Eve Poole
Eve Poole (born Eva Auerbach; 29 December 1924 – 26 December 1992) was a New Zealand politician who served as Mayor of Invercargill from 1983 until her death in 1992. She was the first woman and Jew to hold this position. Early life Poole was born in Frankfurt, Germany on 29 December 1924 to Polish migrants Hinde and Nachman Auerbach. She was named Eva after her maternal aunt. The family moved to Berlin in the late 1920s. Her father was brutally beaten in a Nazi street demonstration against Jews in 1932, and thus began a years-long struggle to migrate the family to Palestine. While much of Poole's maternal family also made it to Palestine, her father's family was largely wiped out in The Holocaust. Poole and her sister Pnina would often have to give up their beds to fellow refugees that their family would shelter. Ralph Hanan
Josiah Ralph Hanan (13 June 1909 – 24 July 1969), known as Ralph Hanan, was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. He was Mayor of Invercargill and then represented the electorate in Parliament, following in his uncle Josiah Hanan's footsteps. He served in World War II and his injuries ultimately caused his death at age 60. He is best remembered for the abolition of the death penalty, which had been suspended by the Labour Party, but which National was to reintroduce. As Minister of Justice, it was Hanan's role to introduce the legislation to Parliament, but he convinced enough of his party colleagues to vote with the opposition and thus abolished the death penalty in New Zealand. Josiah Alfred Hanan (12 May 1868 – 22 March 1954), known to his colleagues as Joe Hanan, was a New Zealand politician, cabinet minister, and legislative councillor. He also served as Mayor of Invercargill, and as Chancellor of the University of New Zealand. Early life Hanan was born in Invercargill, New Zealand, and educated at Invercargill Central School (dux) and Southland Boys' High School. James Walker Bain
James Walker Bain (1841 – 29 September 1899) was a 19th-century New Zealand politician. He was a significant businessman in Invercargill and Southland. Bain was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1841. His parents were the spirit merchant John Bain and his wife, Elizabeth Middlemass. He received his education at the Free Church Normal School and then at a private academy. He started with the printing company Oliver and Boyd and learned the trade of a compositor. He arrived in Port Chalmers in New Zealand, Otago's harbour, on 23 September 1858 on the ''Jura'' from Glasgow. His parents, five sisters and one brother arrived in Otago on the ''Gloucester'' three months later; one of his sisters was Wilhelmina Sherriff Bain. George Lumsden (12 March 1815 – 11 February 1904) was a 19th-century New Zealand politician. Biography Lumsden was born in Fife, Scotland, in 1815. He learned the trade of watchmaker from his uncle at Pittenweem. Lumsden and his wife Christina (née Anderson, married 1842) emigrated to Geelong, Australia, in 1858 on the ''Ravenseraig''.
