Manching is a municipality in the district of Pfaffenhofen, in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated on the river Paar, 7 km southeast of Ingolstadt. In the late Iron Age, there was a Celtic settlement, the Oppidum of Manching, on the location of present-day Manching. Airbus Defence and Space (former Military Air Systems business unit of EADS) has its flight test center here at Manching Airport. Oppidum Of Manching
The Oppidum of Manching (german: Oppidum von Manching) was a large Celtic proto-urban or city-like settlement at modern-day Manching, near Ingolstadt, in Bavaria, Germany. The Iron Age town (or oppidum) was founded in the 3rd century BC and existed until c. 50-30 BC. It reached its largest extent during the late La Tène period (late 2nd century BC), when it had a size of 380 hectares. At that time, 5,000 to 10,000 people lived within its 7.2 km walls. Thus, the Manching oppidum was one of the largest settlements north of the Alps. The ancient name of the site is unknown, but it is assumed that it was the central site of the Celtic Vindelici tribe. Manching Airport
Ingolstadt Manching Airfield, or ''Fliegerhorst Ingolstadt/Manching'' in German , is a military airbase with civil usage located in Manching near Ingolstadt, Germany. Usage The airfield is home to the Bundeswehr Technical and Airworthiness Center for Aircraft.. The first flights of the Tornado and Eurofighter prototypes took place here. The F104 and the F4 were flown here testing weapons systems in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. During the Space Shuttle missions it was considered as a landing site for TAL aborts. Pfaffenhofen (district)
Pfaffenhofen () is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in Bavaria, Germany. It is bounded by (from the south and clockwise) the districts of Eichstätt, Kelheim, Freising, Dachau and Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, and the city of Ingolstadt. History In early medieval times the region was partially property of the powerful monasteries of Ilmmünster and Münchsmünster, and partially divided into tiny secular states. Paar
The Paar is a river of Bavaria, Germany, a right tributary of the Danube. For several tens of kilometers it flows parallel to the Lech, at only a few km distance. Barthelmarkt
The Barthelmarkt is an annual Volksfest (beer festival and travelling funfair) in Manching, near Ingolstadt, Germany. It is held on the last weekend of August and lasts four days. Every year, about 250,000 people visit it. Though first mentioned in 1354, its roots can be traced back as early as to the 1st century BC, when the Romans established a cattle market in the area.
