Macedonian Oak
''Quercus trojana'', the Macedonian oak is an oak in the turkey oak section ( ''Quercus'' sect. ''Cerris''). It is native to southeast Europe and southwest Asia, from southern Italy east across the southern Balkans (Croatia, Albania, Serbia, North Macedonia and Greece) to western Turkey, growing at low to moderate altitudes (up to in the south of the range in southwestern Turkey), in dry areas. Description ''Quercus trojana'' is a small to medium-sized tree reaching tall, late deciduous to semi-evergreen, with gray-green leaves long and 1.5–4 cm broad with a coarsely serrated margin with sharply pointed teeth. The acorns are 2–4 cm long when mature (about 18 months after pollination) and largely enclosed in the scaly acorn cup. Philip Barker Webb (10 July 1793 – 31 August 1854) was an English botanist. Life Webb was born to a wealthy, aristocratic family; his father was the lord of the manors of Witley and Milford, Surrey, Milford, in Surrey, England. Webb was educated at Harrow School and Christ Church, Oxford. He collected plants in Italy, Spain, and Portugal, and was the first person to collect in the Tetuan Mountains of Morocco. En route to Brazil he made what was intended to be a brief visit to the Canary Islands, but he stayed for a considerable time, returning after his Brazil expedition. The results can be seen in the nine-volume ''Natural History of the Canary Islands, Histoire Naturelle des Iles Canaries'' (''Natural History of the Canary Islands''), which he co-authored with Sabin Berthelot. Fossil Flora Of Kızılcahamam District
This fossil flora in Turkey stems from at least six Pliocene deposits in Güvem and Beşkonak villages, north of Ankara, north of Kızılcahamam and south of the Black Sea coast. They are to above sea level, extending north-south and east-west. Between six and seven million years ago, a fresh water lake existed there in a forested area with mostly broad leaved deciduous tree species, dominated by sequoia and oak. The Turkish botany professor Baki Kasaplıgil (1918-1992) from Çankırı who was professor at the Biology Department, Mills College, Oakland, California from 1956 to 1992, made fossil collecting trips to the area around Kızılcahamam - Çerkeş road in 1964 and 1968.
