Little Slit Shells
Scissurellidae, sometimes known by the common name little slit snails, are a taxonomic family of minute sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs or micromolluscs in the clade Vetigastropoda (according to the taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005).Bouchet, P. (2011). Scissurellidae. Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=1730 on 2011-05-08 The shells of these snails vary in adult size from less than 6 mm to less than 1 mm. Distribution Scissurellids occur world-wide, from the intertidal zone down to the abyssal depths, including around hydrothermal vents. Taxonomy There are about 169 living described species of Scissurellidae, but the diversity of scissurellids is still far from being completely assessed (approximately 60 collected species await description). The monophyly of the family is questionable. In 2003, there were about twenty-five genera divided into five subfamilies (Scis ...

Scissurella Costata
''Scissurella costata'' is a species of minute sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Scissurellidae. Description The size of the shell varies between 1 mm and 2.5 mm. The thin, white shell is transparent. The spire is depressed, and composed of 4 whorls that are plane on their upper surfaces, strongly carinated at the periphery, and convex below the carina. The body whorl is very large, and widely umbilicated. The oblique aperture is subquadrangular. The simple columella is arcuate. The simple lip is sinuous, with a narrow profound fissure. The slit fasciole forms the carina of the whorls, with elevated, lamellar edges, and arcuate growth lamellae. The umbilicus is broad and deep. It is carinated at the border. The surface is sculptured with arcuate longitudinal riblets, widely spaced and a little undulating, and fine spiral striae. Distribution This marine species occurs off Spain (Tenerife), Canary Islands), Portugal (Madeira)and in the Mediterran ...

Anatomidae
Anatomidae is a family of minute sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the clade Vetigastropoda (according to the taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005). Anatomidae was raised to the rank of subfamily to the rank of family in a study by Geiger & Jansen (2004). Bouchet & Rocroi placed it in the superfamily Scissurelloidea. This was disputed in 2008 by Yasunori Kano who does not believe that Anatomidae should be separated from Scissurellidae and actually states that it is the subfamily Anatominae. He suggests that this result was induced by contamination or mislabelling. This family has no subfamilies. Genera Genera within the family Anatomidae include: * ''Anatoma'' Woodward, 1859 * ''Sasakiconcha ''Sasakiconcha'' is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Anatomidae Anatomidae is a family of minute sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the clade Vetigastropoda Vetigastropoda is a major taxonomic group ...'' Sinezona
''Sinezona'' is a genus of minute sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks or micromollusks in the family Scissurellidae, the little slit shells. Description The shell has turbinate or depressed turbinate form. The anal fissure is closed, forming a foramen in the outer wall of the aperture. The slit fasciole is shorter, not over 1½ whorls in length. ''Sinezona'' is a ''Scissurella'' in which the anal slit becomes closed in the adult, and transformed into an oblong perforation like one of the holes of a '' Haliotis''. D'Orbigny
Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny (6 September 1802 – 30 June 1857) was a French naturalist who made major contributions in many areas, including zoology (including malacology), palaeontology, geology, archaeology and anthropology. D'Orbigny was born in Couëron (Loire-Atlantique), the son of a ship's physician and amateur naturalist. The family moved to La Rochelle in 1820, where his interest in natural history was developed while studying the marine fauna and especially the microscopic creatures that he named "foraminiferans". In Paris he became a disciple of the geologist Pierre Louis Antoine Cordier (1777–1861) and Georges Cuvier. All his life, he would follow the theory of Cuvier and stay opposed to Lamarckism. South American era D'Orbigny travelled on a mission for the Paris Museum, in South America between 1826 and 1833. He visited Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, and returned to France with an enor ...

Arthur William Baden Powell
Arthur William Baden Powell (4 April 1901 – 1 July 1987) was a New Zealand malacologist, naturalist and palaeontologist, a major influence in the study and classification of New Zealand molluscs through much of the 20th century. He was known to his friends and family by his third name, "Baden". Biography Early life The name Baden had been a given name in a Powell family since 1731, when Susannah Powell née Thistlethwayte (1696–1762) gave to her child (1731–1792) the maiden name of her mother, Susannah Baden (1663–1692). The name Baden, particularly when associated with the surname Powell, became famous in 1900–1901, the year Arthur William Baden Powell was born, because of the siege of Mafeking, the most famous British action in the Second Boer War, which turned the British commander of the besieged, Robert Baden-Powell, into a national hero. Throughout the British Empire, babies were named after him. No family connection has yet been established between Arthur W ...

Depressizonidae
''Depressizona'' is a genus of small to minute sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs or micromolluscs in the superfamily Scissurelloidea. ''Depressizona'' is the only genus within the family Depressizonidae. Depressizonidae was described as the subfamily Depressizoninae Geiger, 2003, in 2003. Then in 2005 it was considered to be a synonym of Scissurellinae in the family Scissurellidae according to the taxonomy of Bouchet & Roctoi (2005) and it has also been placed in Scissurellidae. In 2009 it was updated to the family level, Depressizonidae, when the second known species '' Depressizona axiosculpta'' was described.
