Swedish Death Metal
Swedish death metal is a death metal music scene developed in Sweden. Many Swedish death metal bands are associated with the melodic death metal movement, thus giving Swedish death metal a different sound from other variations of death metal. Unlike American death metal groups, the first Swedish bands were rooted in hardcore punk. Gothenburg has a large melodic death metal scene while Stockholm is known for its more raw death metal scene. History Precursors Unlike American groups, the Swedish death metal scene's earliest originators were influenced by punk rock, especially the D-beat and hardcore punk scene. Bathory, who would subsequently become a primary influence for the black metal scene, were a pivotal group in Swedish extreme metal. In the early 1990s, two death metal scenes emerged in Gothenburg and Stockholm. The first wave of "Swedish death metal" consisted of the bands Carnage, Morbid and Nihilist, who fragmented later into Entombed, Dismember and Unleashed. Ma ...

The Crown (band)
The Crown is a Swedish death metal band from Trollhättan, active from 1990 to 2004, and again since 2009. History Originally, they used the name Crown of Thorns but were forced to change their name due to an American band already using that name. Their music and lyrics are inspired by death, antireligious themes (mostly targeting Christianity) and rebellion. They are known to fuse melodic death metal with aggressive old-school death metal tendencies and considerable thrash metal influences, reminiscent of bands such as Possessed and old Sepultura. The Crown disbanded in 2004. After that, Lindstrand went on to form One Man Army and the Undead Quartet. Tervonen formed Angel Blake, named after a song by Danzig. Sunesson is in a band called Engel. Olsfelt is also in a band called Stolen Policecar. The band was reformed in December 2009 with Jonas Stålhammar of God Macabre as the new vocalist. On 30 June 2010, it was reported that The Crown signed a worldwide deal with Ce ...

Edge Of Sanity
Edge of Sanity was a Swedish death metal band that, alongside Opeth, is commonly regarded as being the first to fuse extreme metal styles like death and black metal with progressive rock. The group was founded by Dan Swanö in 1989 and ended in 2003. History Edge of Sanity began as a death metal band with their debut release '' Nothing but Death Remains''. The band's second release, '' Unorthodox'', with tracks like "Enigma" and "When All Is Said", showed Edge of Sanity branching out from some of the genre's conventions. '' The Spectral Sorrows'', '' Until Eternity Ends'', and '' Purgatory Afterglow'' continued the trend, so that by the release of '' Crimson'' (1996), Edge of Sanity was a progressive metal band. ''Crimson'' was a 40-minute concept album consisting entirely of one track, concerning a post-apocalyptic future in which mankind had lost the ability to breed. After one more album, '' Infernal'' (1997), guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Dan Swanö left Edge of Sani ...

The Duskfall
The Duskfall is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Luleå, formed in 1999. The band released four full-length studio albums and, shortly afterwards, split in 2008; however, they reformed in 2014. History The band was formed in 1999 when guitarist Mikael Sandorf, split-up from his previous melodic death metal band Gates of Ishtar and shortly afterwards the band was created. Initially the band would be named Soulash, until changing it in 2001 to The Duskfall. Although line-up changes would hamper the band at first when band members Tommi Konu and Urban Carlsson departed, they would quickly fill the vacant slots with drummer Oskar Karlsson (from the later period of Gates of Ishtar) and bassist Kaj Molin. Soon after, the band would record and release their first demo entitled ''Deliverance'' in 2001. In 2002, Duskfall released their debut album ''Frailty'', which was produced by Daniel Bergstrand. After the release of ''Frailty'', Joachim Lindbäck would join the band on guita ...

In May 1994, drummer and vocalist Johan Ericson, bassist and vocalist Jesper Stolpe and guitarist Andy Hindenäs assembled the band Kerberos, initially playing melodic death metal with black metal influences. Seven months later, lead vocalist and lyrics composer Anders Jacobsson joined the band, and its name changed to Draconian. Their first demo, ''Shades of a Lost Moon'', was recorded in 1995. Guests were flutist and vocalist Jessica Eriksson, keyboardist and vocalist Susanne Arvidsson, and Andreas Haag on the introductory section of “My Nemesis”. Dissection (band)
Dissection was a Swedish extreme metal band from Strömstad, formed in 1989 by guitarist, vocalist and main songwriter Jon Nödtveidt and bassist Peter Palmdahl. Despite a number of lineup changes, Dissection released ''The Somberlain'' in 1993 and '' Storm of the Light's Bane'' in 1995, before splitting up in 1997 due to Nödtveidt's imprisonment for complicity in the murder of Josef Meddour. After his release, Nödtveidt reformed the band in 2004 with new members who he felt could "stand behind and live up to the demands of Dissection's Satanic concept." They released their third and final full-length album ''Reinkaos'' in April 2006, before disbanding that June. Nödtveidt said he had "reached the limitations of music as a tool for expressing what I want to express, for myself and the handful of others that I care about." Two months later, Nödtveidt committed suicide with a gun inside a circle of lit candles in his apartment in Hässelby. Dissection released a number of l ...

Pioneers of Swedish death metal, Dismember is now considered one of the country's "big four", alongside Entombed, Grave, and Unleashed. History Formation and Nuclear Blast-era (1988–2002) The band formed in Stockholm in 1988. After a hiatus, during which several members joined Carnage, the band began recording in earnest in 1991 and released their debut album '' Like an Ever Flowing Stream'' that year. The album is today heralded as a milestone for the burgeoning Swedish death metal scene and established the band's fanbase, which was further bolstered by the controversy surrounding one song in particular, "Skin Her Alive". The song prompted an obscenity charge in the United Kingdom, against which the band successfully defended themselves. In 1992, Dismember released the '' Pieces'' EP, and the following year continued with second a ...

Disfear
Disfear is a Swedish crust punk band that formed in the early 1990s and recorded sporadically over the years. After releasing the albums ''Soul Scars'' in 1995 and ''Everyday Slaughter'' in 1997, the group did not release another album until 2003 with a 12-track album, ''Misanthropic Generation'', featuring vocalist Tomas Lindberg of At the Gates and The Great Deceiver and Uffe Cederlund of Entombed. They later worked with Converge's Kurt Ballou for their album ''Live the Storm''. Bassist Henke Frykman died of cancer on 25 March 2011. Dimension Zero (Swedish Band)
Dimension Zero is a melodic death metal band based in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was formed in 1995 as a side project by In Flames' former guitarists Jesper Strömblad and Glenn Ljungström. The former Marduk drummer and vocalist Jocke Gothberg joined later on vocals, as well as Hans Nilsson (ex- Liers in Wait, Diabolique, Crystal Age) on drums. The band released ''Penetrations from the Lost World'' in 1997 before splitting up the following year. They reformed in 2000, and later recorded ''Silent Night Fever'' and '' This Is Hell''. Tours have been rare due to members' other musical commitments. Musically, they have been described as strictly old-school Swedish death metal in the range of At the Gates, Unleashed and Defleshed. Because of Dimension Zero's inception by In Flames' lead guitarist, Jesper Strömblad, their albums have drawn critical comparisons with some of In Flames' earlier work. Their latest album, ''He Who Shall Not Bleed'', was released in 2007. In May 2014, it ...

Desultory
Desultory was part of the first wave of Swedish death metal bands, alongside Entombed, Dismember, Unleashed and others. ''Into Eternity'', their Metal Blade debut following a lesser-known EP release, is standard for the genre, energetic and forceful, straddling the line between the more brutal American death style and the melodic Gothenburg variety. Though not groundbreaking, it was considered a fine album by fans. By most accounts, their follow-up, ''Bitterness'', is more of the same, but 1996's ''Swallow the Snake'' takes quite a different approach, dropping the death vocals (and, for the most part, death metal itself), for a more heavy rock sound likened by some to Soundgarden Soundgarden was an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984 by singer and drummer Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil (both of whom are the only members to appear in every incarnation of the band), and bassist Hiro Yama .... Demonoid (band)
Demonoid is a Swedish extreme metal band founded in 2003 that derives its influences from traditional death metal, thrash metal and black metal. Therion guitarist Kristian Niemann previously had the desire to produce more brutal music and had made earlier attempts with his brother Johan Niemann, although none of this earlier work had appeared on any records. Fellow Therion member Christofer Johnsson had later joined the project along with Rickard Evensand who was working with Therion as a drummer at that time. History So far they have released only one album, '' Riders of the Apocalypse'', in 2004. The album is about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Christofer never intended to tour and only joined as a session vocalist for the studio recording of the first album, and with two other members busy touring with Therion, Demonoid never played any live concerts. On March 25, 2006, it was officially announced that Christofer Johnsson had withdrawn from Demonoid and that an una ...
