Library Technical Services
Library technical services are the ongoing maintenance activities of a library's collection, including the three broad areas of collection development, cataloging, and processing. Technical services are the infrastructure that enable the user's experience of many library services and are typically performed "behind the scenes." Collection development *Identification: locating potentially worthwhile items to add to the collection. *Selection: deciding which of the identified items to add to the collection. *Acquisitions: securing items for the collection, including the purchase of books, databases, e-books, and multimedia materials for a library's collection. Cataloging *Description: creating and adapting records for library materials and licensed content, allowing users to search and discover these resources in the library catalog. Collection Development
Library collection development is the process of systematically building the collection of a particular library to meet the information needs of the library users (a service population) in a timely and economical manner using information resources locally held as well as resources from other organizations. According to the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), acquisition and collection development focuses on methodological and topical themes pertaining to acquisition of print and other analogue library materials (by purchase, exchange, gift, legal deposit), and the licensing and purchase of electronic information resources.
