Lackey (manservant)
A lackey or lacquey, in its original definition (attested 1529, according to the ''Oxford English Dictionary''), is a uniformed manservant. The modern connotation of "servile follower" appeared later, in 1588 (''OED''). Etymology There are several theories about the origins of the word. By one theory, it is derived from Medieval French ''laquais'', "foot soldier, footman, servant", ultimately from Turkish ''ulak'', literally "a messenger". The word also exists in German, where ''Lakai'' denotes a liveried manservant in the services of a monarch or prince. Usage in popular culture Lackey is typically used as a derogatory term for a servant with little or no self-respect who belittles himself in order to gain an advantage. Such advantage is often assumed to be slight, temporary and often illusory. Lackey Moth
The lackey moth (''Malacosoma neustria'') is a moth in the family Lasiocampidae. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of ''Systema Naturae''. It is common across southern Britain and central Europe. ''Malacosoma'' species are notable for their caterpillars which are brightly coloured and form silken tents to regulate their temperature. ''Malacosoma neustria'' caterpillars are brown with blue, orange and white stripes. The adults are a fairly uniform brown. The larvae feed mainly on trees and shrubs from within their tents. Lackey (also known locally in its heyday as "the Reservation") was a small unincorporated community near Yorktown in York County, Virginia, United States established primarily after the American Civil War. Lackey is now extinct as the properties were bought by the federal government in 1918 for use as a naval military installation. History Evidence from an oral history study suggests there was a small free people of color community in this area before the Civil War. Free African American families were established primarily by unions between white slave owners and African or African-American women during the colonial period, when the working class lived and worked together. From 1860 to 1870, the black population in York County doubled, due to slaves escaping to Union lines. The total population in the county was majority black, with a portion having gained freedom before the war. Lackey General Merchandise And Warehouse
Lackey General Merchandise and Warehouse is a historic commercial building at the northeast corner of Arkansas Highway 66 and North Peabody Avenue in the center of Mountain View, Arkansas. It is a roughly rectangular two-story structure, built out of local stone, with a flat roof surrounded by a low parapet. Its main facade faces west toward the Stone County Courthouse, with plate glass windows topped by awnings on the first floor, and four sash windows on the second. The main entrance is in an angle at the street corner, with the building corner supported by a square stone post. Built in 1924, it is believed to be the largest commercial building in Stone County. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
