IMUSE
iMUSE (''Interactive Music Streaming Engine'') is an interactive music system used in a number of LucasArts video games. The idea behind iMUSE is to synchronize music with the visual action in a video game so that the audio continuously matches the on-screen events and transitions from one musical theme to another are done seamlessly. iMUSE was developed in the early 1990s by composers Michael Land and Peter McConnell while working at LucasArts. The iMUSE system was patented by LucasArts in 1994, after being added to the fifth version of the SCUMM game engine in 1991. Development iMUSE was developed out of Michael Land's frustration for the audio system used by LucasArts while composing ''The Secret of Monkey Island''. His goal was to create a system which would enable the composer to set the mood via music according to the events of the game. The project was much more daring than he had imagined. LeChuck's Revenge
''Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge'' is an adventure game developed and published by LucasArts in 1991. A sequel to 1990's ''The Secret of Monkey Island'', it is the second game in the '' Monkey Island'' series. It was the sixth LucasArts game to use the SCUMM engine, and the first game to use the iMUSE sound system. In it, pirate Guybrush Threepwood searches for the legendary treasure of Big Whoop and again faces off against the pirate LeChuck, who is now a zombie. The development team for ''Monkey Island 2'' was largely the same as for ''The Secret of Monkey Island''. The project was led by Ron Gilbert, who was again joined by Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman. The game was a critical success, but a commercial disappointment. ''Monkey Island 2'' was followed by '' The Curse of Monkey Island'' in 1997; the third game in the series had to deal with the predecessor's ambiguous ending and to vaguely explain it. Lucasfilm Games (known as LucasArts between 1990 and 2021) is an American video game brand licensing, licensor that is part of Lucasfilm. Michael Land
Michael Z. Land (born 1961) is an American video game composer and musician best known for his scores for various games produced by LucasArts. Biography Early life and career Michael Land was born in the North Shore area north of Boston, Massachusetts. His parents enrolled him in classical piano lessons when he was five, and he continued in these until he chose to stop out of frustration at age twelve. He started to play the electric bass guitar a couple of years later. He focused more on improvisation, and he played with several bands throughout high school. In 1979, Land enrolled in the music program at Harvard University, where he concentrated on electronic music. He also rekindled his interest in classical music, particularly that of Ludwig van Beethoven. After graduation, he entered Mills College in Oakland, California to further study electronic music. Peter McConnell
Peter Nelson McConnell (born April 19, 1960), also known as Peter Mc, is an American video game composer and musician, best known for his work at LucasArts and for composing the soundtracks for every '' Sly Cooper'' game since the second installment. Biography McConnell was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Peter studied music as an undergraduate at Harvard University in the 1980s under Timothy Vincent Clarke, Curt Cacioppo and Ivan Tcherepnin. In Harvard McConnell befriended the future LucasArts composer Michael Land, who composed many of the company's titles, and worked with him at the audio company Lexicon. While beginning his career in the Sound Department at LucasArts, Land needed someone who would both compose and implement music into his second project '' Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge'' and McConnell stepped in. LucasArts Adventure Games
From the late 1980s to the early 2000s, LucasArts was well known for their point-and-click graphic adventure games, nearly all of which received high scoring reviews at the time of their release. Their style tended towards the humorous, often irreverent or slapstick, slapstick humor, with the exceptions of ''Loom (video game), Loom'' and ''The Dig (video game), The Dig''. Their game design philosophy was that the player should never die or reach a complete unwinnable, dead-end, although there were exceptions. Many of the games shared similar game interfaces and technology, powered by SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion). After 1997, these games transitioned into 3D computer graphics, 3D graphics with the GrimE game engine.
