The history of Nintendo begins in 1889, founded to produce handmade playing cards. In the mid-1900s, the company licensed third-party card graphics, such as Disney characters. Hanafuda
are a style of Japanese playing cards. They are typically smaller than Western playing cards, only , but thicker and stiffer. On the face of each card is a depiction of plants, ''tanzaku'' (短冊), animals, birds, or man-made objects. One single card depicts a human. The back side is usually plain, without a pattern or design of any kind, and traditionally coloured either red or black. Hanafuda are used to play a variety of games including ''Koi-Koi'' and ''Hachi-Hachi''. In Korea, hanafuda are known as ''Hwatu'' (Korean: 화투, Hanja: , "battle of flowers") and made of plastic with a textured back side. The most popular games are ''Go-stop'' (Korean: 고스톱) and ''Seotda'' (Korean: 섯다). Hwatu is very commonly played in South Korea during special holidays such as Lunar New Year and ''Chuseok'' (추석). Sekiryo Kaneda
, also known as , was the second president of what is now Nintendo Co., Ltd., from 1929 to 1949. He married the daughter of Fusajiro Yamauchi, Tei Yamauchi, and took the Yamauchi surname. Kaneda retired in 1949 after suffering a stroke, leaving Nintendo to be run by his grandson, Hiroshi Yamauchi. Career Kaneda married Fusajiro Yamauchi's daughter, Tei, and based on Japanese adult adoption rules, he took the Yamauchi surname on the same day in order to inherit Nintendo. Fusajiro Yamauchi retired in 1929, making Kaneda Nintendo's second president. When Kaneda took over Nintendo, he was in charge of Japan's largest card maker. Love Tester
The is a novelty toy made by Nintendo in 1969. Designed "for young ladies and men", the device tries to determine how much two people love each other. To operate the device, both users grab one of the connected spherical metal sensors with one hand and hold each other's hands with the other; the Measuring instrument, meter on the device displays their "love score" on a scale between 1 and 100. The Love Tester was designed by Gunpei Yokoi (eventual creator of the Game & Watch series and the original Game Boy), who said that he "loved explaining that the meter gave better results when people kissed the girl..." The Ultra Machine is a batting toy made by Nintendo and designed by Gunpei Yokoi in 1967. History It is part of Nintendo's ''Ultra toy'' series, which includes the Ultra Hand and the Ultra Scope. It launches soft balls that are to be hit with a bat. It sold over a million units. It was released elsewhere as the ''Slugger Mate''.
