Heta-uma
''Heta-uma'' ( or ) is a Japanese underground manga movement started in the 1970s with the magazine ''Garo''. ''Heta-uma'' can be translated as "bad but good", designating a work which looks poorly drawn, but with an aesthetically conscious quality, opposed to the polished look of mainstream manga. Teruhiko Yumura
is a Japanese illustrator, designer, cartoonist and music critic. He is one of the exemplars of the heta-uma illustration aesthetic. Born in Hakuzu, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo (currently Nishi-Shinjuku), he signed works under the pen names "Terry Johnson" (Gonzo), "FLAMINGO TERRY", "FRAMINA TERRENO GONZO", "TERRINO FLAMINI 'GONZAREZ" and "KURUZURU Terumanta". Yumura is known by the nickname "King Terry". Yumura studied at Tama Art University and drew covers for the magazine ''Garo'' in the 1970s and 1980s. He collaborated with copywriter Shigesato Itoi in short comics such as ''Penguin Shuffle'' and ''Jonetsu Penguin no Gohan.'' Garo (magazine)
was a monthly manga anthology magazine in Japan, founded by Katsuichi Nagai and published by Seirindō from 1964 until 2002. It was fundamental for the emergence and development of alternative and avant-garde manga. History Katsuichi Nagai founded ''Garo'' in July 1964 in order to publish the work of ''gekiga'' artists who didn't want to work for mainstream manga magazines after the demise of the rental book industry ( ''kashihon''). The magazine offered artists artistic freedom, but didn't pay them any salaries. Nagai particularly wanted to promote Marxist ''gekiga'' artist Sanpei Shirato's work, naming the magazine after one of Shirato's ninja characters. The first series published in ''Garo'' was Shirato's drama '' Kamui'' explored themes of class struggle and anti-authoritarianism around a Burakumin ninja boy with an Ainu name. Yoshikazu Ebisu
is a Japanese manga artist and actor. Biography Born in Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture, Ebisu grew up in Nagasaki. During childhood, he experienced the trauma of post-World War II Japan and atomic weapons. He drew manga since he was a child, influenced by Osamu Tezuka and Mitsuteru Yokoyama, being especially an avid reader of the latter's series ''Tetsujin 28-go''. In the late 1950s, Ebisu discovered the emerging genre and was immediately affected. "My interests and my themes changed", he recalled, "I moved from giant robots to human beings and realistic stories." Furthermore, he attributed great importance to the influence of American action films, in particular '' The Last Command'' directed by Frank Lloyd and starring John Wayne, which inspired him to invent increasingly original and intense representations in the use of works. Takashi Nemoto
Takashi Nemoto ( ''Nemoto Takashi''; born 28 June 1958) is a Japanese comics artist and illustrator. Biography Nemoto was born in Tokyo, He has been drawing since childhood, with themes and obsessions that will remain consistent until maturity: one of his first manga stories, from the third grade, showed the emperor Hirohito beaten in public baths and eventually forced to pee in his pants. Bored and uninspired by the contemporary popular manga that surrounded him, unaware of underground innovations, Nemoto at the age of thirteen stopped drawing. His random discovery of by Teruhiko Yumura, in the late seventies, rekindled his enthusiasm for manga.
