Giants (Greek Mythology)
In Greek and Roman mythology, the Giants, also called Gigantes (Greek: Γίγαντες, ''Gígantes'', Γίγας, ''Gígas''), were a race of great strength and aggression, though not necessarily of great size. They were known for the Gigantomachy (or Gigantomachia), their battle with the Olympian gods. According to Hesiod, the Giants were the offspring of Gaia (Earth), born from the blood that fell when Uranus (Sky) was castrated by his Titan son Cronus. Archaic and Classical representations show Gigantes as man-sized hoplites (heavily armed ancient Greek foot soldiers) fully human in form. Later representations (after c. 380 BC) show Gigantes with snakes for legs. In later traditions, the Giants were often confused with other opponents of the Olympians, particularly the Titans, an earlier generation of large and powerful children of Gaia and Uranus. The vanquished Giants were said to be buried under volcanoes and to be the cause of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. O ...

Citizen Kabuto
''Giants: Citizen Kabuto'' is a third-person shooter video game with real-time strategy elements. It was the first project for Planet Moon Studios, which consisted of former Shiny Entertainment employees who had worked on the game ''MDK'' in 1997. ''Giants'' went through four years of development before Interplay Entertainment published it on December 7, 2000, for Microsoft Windows; a port was published by MacPlay in 2001, and the game was also ported to the later that year. In the game, players take control of a single character from one of three humanoid races to either complete the story in single-player mode or to challenge other players in online multiplayer matches. They can select heavily armed ''Meccaryns'' equipped with jet packs, or amphibious spell-casting ''Sea Reapers''; the game's subtitle, "Citizen Kabuto", refers to the last selectable race, a thundering behemoth who can execute earthshaking wrestling attacks to pulverize its enemies. The single-player mode is ...

Giant (Dungeons & Dragons)
In the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game, giants are a collection of very large humanoid creatures based on giants of legend, or in third edition, a "creature type". Description Giants are humanoid creatures of great strength and size with a self-involved social focus. They "often create their own societies away from the other races". All giants have low-light vision. As a group, they have no other special abilities or immunities. Dwarves have a bonus to their armor class against attacks from creatures of the giant type, due to their experience with fighting these oversized foes. Creative origins Giants are based both on the giants from mythology and those appearing in J.R.R. Tolkien's work. Their stone-throwing ability indicates their creative roots in wargaming. Publication history Giants were some of the earliest creatures introduced in the ''D&D'' game, appearing in the first 1974 edition. ''Dungeons & Dragons'' (1974–1976) Giants were among the first mon ...

Giants (series)
The ''Giants'' series is a group of five science fiction novels by James P. Hogan, beginning with his first novel, 1977's ''Inherit the Stars''. Origins Hogan revealed in the introduction to the omnibus edition ''The Two Moons'', that ''Inherit the Stars'' was inspired by a viewing of the film ''2001: A Space Odyssey'' (1968) which he enjoyed until the ending. Complaining about what he saw as the confusing, effects-heavy conclusion at work afterwards, each of his colleagues bet him five pounds that he couldn't write and publish a science-fiction novel. The result was ''Inherit the Stars'', which was published by Del Rey Books in May 1977. He later asked Arthur C. Clarke about the meaning of the ending of ''2001'', to which Clarke reportedly replied that while the ending of Hogan's ''Inherit the Stars'' made more sense, the ending of ''2001'' made more money. Background The series is notable for its creation of a substantial prehistory of the Solar System, stretching back mil ...

Giant
In folklore, giants (from Ancient Greek: '' gigas'', cognate giga-) are beings of human-like appearance, but are at times prodigious in size and strength or bear an otherwise notable appearance. The word ''giant'' is first attested in 1297 from Robert of Gloucester's chronicle. It is derived from the ''Gigantes'' ( grc-gre, Γίγαντες) of Greek mythology. Fairy tales such as '' Jack the Giant Killer'' have formed the modern perception of giants as dimwitted ogres, sometimes said to eat humans, while other giants tend to eat the livestock. The antagonist in ''Jack and the Beanstalk'' is often described as a giant. In some more recent portrayals, like those of Jonathan Swift and Roald Dahl, some giants are both intelligent and friendly. Literary and cultural analysis Giants appear in the folklore of cultures worldwide as they represent a relatively simple concept. Representing the human body enlarged to the point of being monstrous, giants evoke terror and remind humans ...

Nephilim
The Nephilim (; ''Nəfīlīm'') are mysterious beings or people in the Hebrew Bible who are large and strong. The word ''Nephilim'' is loosely translated as ''giants'' in some translations of the Hebrew Bible, but left untranslated in others. Jewish explanations interpret them as hybrid sons of fallen angels. The main reference to them is in Genesis 6:1–4, but the passage is ambiguous and the identity of the Nephilim is disputed. According to the Book of Numbers 13:33, they later inhabited Canaan at the time of the Israelite conquest of Canaan. A similar or identical biblical Hebrew term, read as "Nephilim" by some scholars, or as the word "fallen" by others, appears in the Book of Ezekiel 32:27 and is also mentioned in the deuterocanonicals Judith 16:6, Sirach 16:7, Baruch 3:26–28, and Wisdom 14:6. Etymology The Brown-Driver-Briggs Lexicon (1908) gives the meaning of nephilim as "giants", and holds that proposed etymologies of the word are "all very precarious."B ...
