Gargoyle (monster)
The gargoyle is a fantasy and Horror fiction, horror monster inspired by the gargoyle architectural element. While they were believed in mythology to frighten away evil spirits, the idea of such statues physically coming to life is a more recent notion. Like golems, they are usually made of Magic in fiction, magically animated or transformed stone, but have animal or Chimera (mythology), chimera traits and are often guardians of a place such as a cathedral or castle. They can also be depicted as vessels for demonic possession or as a living species resembling statues. The Ankh-Morpork City Watch is the police force of the fictional city of Ankh-Morpork in the ''Discworld'' series by the English writer Terry Pratchett. Discworld (world)
The Discworld is the fictional setting for all of Terry Pratchett's ''Discworld'' fantasy novels. It consists of a large disc (complete with edge-of-the-world drop-off and consequent waterfall) resting on the backs of four huge elephants which are in turn standing on the back of an enormous turtle, named Great A'Tuin (similar to Chukwa or Akupara from Hindu mythology) as it slowly swims through space. The Disc has been shown to be heavily influenced by magic and, while Pratchett gave it certain similarities to planet Earth, he also created his own system of physics for it. ''Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz'' is the fourth book set in the Land of Oz written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by John R. Neill. It was published on June 18, 1908 and reunites Dorothy Gale with the humbug Wizard from ''The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'' (1900). This is one of only two of the original fourteen Oz books (the other being ''The Emerald City of Oz'' (1910), to be illustrated with watercolor paintings. Baum, having resigned himself to writing a series of Oz books, set up elements of this book in the prior ''Ozma of Oz'' (1907). Gargoyle is a name shared by two fictional characters appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Publication history The first Gargoyle, Yuri Topolov, appears in ''The Incredible Hulk'' #1 (May 1962), and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The appearance of Gargoyle in ''Rampaging Hulk'' #1 is merely part of one of Bereet's fictional techno-art films. The first Gargoyle received an entry in '' The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition'' #17, where his real name was revealed. The second Gargoyle, Isaac Christians, is a human/demon hybrid and a member of the Defenders. He was created by writer J. M. DeMatteis and artist Don Perlin.
