Front Electric Sustainer
Front electric sustainer (FES) is a propulsion system for gliders that uses an electric motor powered by batteries and a foldable propeller. It is produced by LZ Design d.o.o. in Logatec, Slovenia. The system uses a 22 kW compact outrunner brushless DC electric motor located in the nose of the sailplane. Power is provided by two lithium-ion battery packs. Lighter gliders are able to self-launch with FES. Heavier gliders can use it as a sustainer system, i.e. climb and cruise sufficiently high and far to avoid an out-landing. Although gliders with FES have a shorter range (70–100 km) under power than gliders with two-stroke gasoline sustainer engines (10 litres at 8.5 L/h at 100 km/h = 120 km) or jet sustaining engines (150–200 km), the electric motor can be expected to start reliably provided there is sufficient energy in the batteries. Schempp-Hirth Discus 2
The Schempp-Hirth Discus-2 is a Standard Class sailplane produced by Schempp-Hirth since 1998. It replaced the highly successful Schempp-Hirth Discus. Design and development In plan view the almost crescent shape of the leading edge is similar to the Discus but is tapered in three stages. An entirely new wing section is used. The dihedral towards the tips was greatly increased compared with the Discus. Winglets are an optional extra. A version with a narrow fuselage is called the Discus-2a and the wider fuselage version is called the 2b. The fuselage was specifically designed to be highly crash resistant. In U.S. Air Force service the Discus-2b is known as the TG-15B. Albastar AS
Albastar AS are gliders produced by the Slovenian company Albastar Ltd. They are currently in the development stage. Albastar AS-13,5m FES Albastar 13,5m FES is a single-seat motor glider with 13.5 m wingspan designed for FAI 13.5 m class which took its maiden flight in April 2013. To achieve better performance, the new airfoil with flaps was designed. It has provision for Ballistic Recovery System (BRS). The cockpit was designed roomy enough to be used by taller pilots. HPH 304
HpH 304 is a family of sailplanes ranging from a single-seat composite 15 metre Class to a two-place 20 metre Open Class manufactured by the Czech company HpH Ltd. The LAK-17 is a Lithuanian single-seat sailplane that was designed at the Lithuanian Aero Club ( lt, Lietuviškos aviacinės konstrukcijos or LAK), and is manufactured by Sportinė Aviacija. The Rolladen-Schneider LS8 is a Standard and 18 metre class single-seat glider developed by Rolladen-Schneider and in series production since 1995. Currently it is manufactured by DG Flugzeugbau. Schempp-Hirth Duo Discus
The Schempp-Hirth Duo Discus is a high-performance two-seat glider primarily designed for fast cross-country flying, including gliding competitions. Often, it is used for advanced training. Design and development The Duo Discus replaced the Janus as Schempp Hirth's high-performance two-seater trainer. It has a four-piece wing with a span of 20 metres. As with most tandem two-seat gliders, its wing is slightly swept forward so the wing root can be slightly aft to allow the rear pilot an improved view. Although it shares its name with the highly successful Standard Class Discus, any resemblance is only superficial. The Schempp-Hirth Ventus-2 is a sailplane produced by Schempp-Hirth since 1994. It replaced the highly successful Schempp-Hirth Ventus. Design and development The Ventus-2a and 2b are 15 metre sailplanes. The 'a' version has a narrow fuselage and the wider fuselage version is called the 2b. Winglets are used with these models. The 18 metre span Ventus-2c was introduced in 1995 and was almost an entirely different aircraft with a different fuselage and wings, but it has the option of shorter tips with winglets to fly as a 15-metre sailplane.
