Fireworm
Amphinomidae, also known as the bristle worms or sea mice, are a family of marine polychaetes, many species of which bear chaetae mineralized with carbonate. The best-known amphinomids are the fireworms, which can cause great pain if their toxin-coated chaetae are touched or trodden on. Their relationship to other polychaete groups is somewhat poorly resolved. Complanine Complanine is a quaternary ammonium salt that has been isolated from the marine fireworm ''Eurythoe complanata''. It causes an inflammatory effect upon contact with the skin or mucous membranes. It was previously known that handling the fireworm caused it to release a chemical that induces inflammation of the skin of marine predators and mammals (including humans). Complanine was the first compound isolated from the fireworm which causes these effects. It is presumed that this compound's function is to deter predators of the fireworm. Complanine
Complanine is a quaternary ammonium compound isolated from the marine fireworm ''Eurythoe complanata In Greek mythology, Eurythoe is one of the Danaïdes. She is one of the possible mothers of Oenomaus by Ares;Scholia on Apollonius Rhodius, ''Argonautica'' 1.752. she is alternatively the mother of Hippodamia (mythology), Hippodamia by Oenomaus.T ...''. It causes an inflammatory effect upon contact with the skin or mucous membranes. Occurrence It was previously known that handling the fireworm caused it to release a chemical that induces inflammation of the skin of marine predators and mammals (including humans). Complanine was the first compound isolated from the fireworm which causes these effects. The chemical structure of Complanine was determined by spectroscopical methods and the absolute configuration was confirmed with a total synthesis. Chloeia Flava
''Chloeia flava'', also known as the golden fireworm, is a segmented bristleworm belonging to the family Amphinomidae. Description The golden fireworm has an elongated body. Its size varies between long, and wide, excluding bristles. Its coloration is red-brown to light brown with sometime a light color band in the middle of the body. The body is made of 37 visible segments, each of them has a distinctive ocelli, which is purple or dark color with a white outline and placed in the middle of the upper side. Small gills, white to deep brown, are present on both external sides of the back just before the bristles and on almost all the segments. The body is covered laterally with calcareous spines or setae, they have bristle aspect which are whitish, fine, sharp and venomous.
