Equestrian At The 1956 Summer Olympics
The equestrian events at the 1956 Summer Olympics were held in Stockholm due to the Australian quarantine regulations and included dressage, eventing, and show jumping. All three disciplines had both individual and team competitions. The competitions were held from 11 to 17 June 1956 at Stockholm Olympic Stadium. There were 158 entries from 29 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Soviet Union, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, USA and Venezuela. This would be the first appearance for Australia, Cambodia and Venezuela in equestrian events. Although Melbourne was awarded the 1956 Olympic Games, Australia had a strict six-month pre-shipment quarantine on horses. Stockholm Olympic Stadium
Stockholm Olympic Stadium ( sv, Stockholms Olympiastadion), most often called Stockholms stadion or (especially locally) simply Stadion, is a stadium in Stockholm, Sweden. Designed by architect Torben Grut, it was opened in 1912; its original use was as a venue for the 1912 Olympic Games. John Rumble
John Rumble (born 27 August 1933) is a past member of the Canadian Equestrian Team in eventing. He won a team bronze medal in eventing at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, together with teammates Jim Elder Robert James Elder, OC (born 27 July 1934) is a Canadian retired businessman and former equestrian. Otto Rothe (6 November 1924 – 9 January 1970) was a German equestrian. He was born in Samonienen in East Prussia (today part of Poland). Albert "Bertie" Edwin Hill (7 February 1927 – 5 August 2005) was a British equestrian who competed at three Olympic Games. After serving in the Home Guard during the Second World War, Hill became an amateur jockey in point-to-point racing. Lars Petrus Ragnar Kastenman, né ''Kahlsson'' (15 August 1924 – 10 June 2013) was a Swedish Army officer and equestrian who won an individual gold medal in ''eventing'' at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Stockholm. Early life Kastenman was born on 15 August 1924 in the cottage named Draget, close to Nynäs Castle in Bälinge socken, Södermanland, Sweden, the son of Johan Kahlsson and his wife Elin (née Johansson). His father was a tailor who fell out of a window and was forced to amputate both legs and who now lived out his days as a merchant; he ran a business in his own cottage. Gustav Fischer (equestrian)
Gustav Fischer (8 November 1915 – 22 November 1990) was a Swiss equestrian athlete who competed at five Summer Olympic Games, winning a total of five medals.
