Electoral District Of Port Curtis
Port Curtis was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1860 to 1992. The district was named after the harbour at Port Curtis, and centred on the regional city of Gladstone. In 1992, it was renamed Gladstone. Port Curtis
Port Curtis is a suburb of Rockhampton in the Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Port Curtis had a population of 281 people. Geography The Fitzroy River bounds the suburb to the north-east. Gavial Creek, a tributary of the Fitzroy River, flows through the locality with their confluence at the north of the suburb. The land is flat and low-lying (less than 10 metres above sea level). The North Coast railway line passes along the western edge of the locality with the junction with the Central Western railway line at Rocklands railway station () within Port Curtis. As at January 2021, very little of the land has been developed with only a few small pockets of residential and industrial use. History Port Curtis Road State School opened on 23 March 1875. George Carter (Queensland Politician)
George Carter (1864–1932) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life George Carter was born in 1864 in Nelson, New Zealand, the son of Samuel Carter and Louisa née Lindsay. He attended Nelson State School. On 17 September 1907 he married Alexandria Delia Kate Comerford in Brisbane. Politics Carter stood as a candidate of the Labor in the electoral district of Brisbane North in the 1907 state election, but was unsuccessful. At the 1915 election, Carter was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the electoral district of Port Curtis, defeating the sitting Ministerialist member John Kessel. He won it despite claims that the local newspaper, the Gladstone Observer misrepresented his campaign speech and refused to publish a letter from him providing correct information. Bill Prest
William George Prest (2 April 1926 – 8 December 2012) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for the Labor Party from 1976 until 1992, former Gladstone Harbour Board member and once Gladstone City Council mayor. Early life Prest was born in Longreach, Queensland. In 1970, he stood for local council elections and was elected, he later became Gladstone's deputy mayor in 1975. Political career After being elected he served as Shadow Minister Tourism, Marine Services and Fisheries until December 1977, then Shadow Minister for Main Roads, Shadow Minister for Local Government and Valuation and Shadow Minister for Transport. In his last term in the Queensland Parliament, Prest caused controversy when he made a racist slur against former state National Party Aboriginal Affairs Minister and future Federal MP Bob Katter when he called him a gin jockey. Jim Burrows (Queensland Politician)
James Burrows (21 December 1886 - 17 August 1970) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Burrows was born at Eidsvold, Queensland, the son of Henry Burrows and his wife Laura Christine (née Brandis). He was educated at Gaeta, Mount Perry and Many Peaks state schools and then did an accountancy and Local Government Clerkship correspondence course with Hemingway Robertson Ltd. He did general bushwork before becoming and auditor and registered valuer. In October 1940 Burrows married Bertha Maud Wilkinson and together had four sons. He died at Gladstone in October 1978. Public life Burrows, representing the Labor Party, won the seat of Port Curtis at the 1947 Queensland state election. Country And Progressive National Party
The Country and Progressive National Party was a short-lived conservative political party in the Australian state of Queensland. Formed in 1925, it combined the state's conservative forces in a single party and held office between 1929 and 1932 under the leadership of Arthur Edward Moore. Following repeated election defeat it split into separate rural and urban wings in 1936. History It was created in 1925 as the result of a merger between the state's two conservative parties, the United Party (the Queensland branch of the Nationalist Party) and the Country Party, in an attempt to end a decade of Labor domination in the state.
