Electoral District Of Kurilpa
Kurilpa was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland from 1912 to 1986. It was named for the Kurilpa Peninsula on the Brisbane River. Until 1960, it was based in the inner southern Brisbane suburbs of West End and the western parts of South Brisbane, but after that, also included Dutton Park, Fairfield, Highgate Hill and parts of Yeronga and Annerley. The seat was created at the 1910 distribution out of part of the two-member South Brisbane seat, and was abolished at the distribution ahead of the 1986 election. The seat's last member, Anne Warner, transferred to South Brisbane, which absorbed most of Kurilpa's territory. James Allan (Australian Politician)
James Allan (20 December 1856 – 26 January 1938) was a draper and a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life and business career Allan was born in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, to parents Robert Allan and his wife Mary (née Hodge). Receiving his final education at Andersonian University, Allan started his working life as an apprentice draper to Daley & Co. in Glasgow before arriving in Australia in 1879. Here he worked as an assistant for D. L. Brown & Co. and in 1882, along with Robert Stark formed Allan & Stark, drapers. The business started out at South Brisbane, but by 1895 business had so greatly increased that they moved to Queen Street, in the centre of Brisbane. In 1911 Allan & Stark was formed into a private company with many of its employees having acquired an interest in it. Sam Doumany
Samuel Sydney Doumany (born 2 September 1937) is an Australian retired politician. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and Attorney-General and Minister for Justice in Queensland. Political career Doumany was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly as the Liberal candidate for Kurilpa at the 1974 election. He was Minister for Welfare from 10 October 1978 to 23 December 1980. He was Minister for Justice and Attorney-General from 23 December 1980 to 18 August 1983. Clive Melwyn Hughes (15 May 1924 – 19 October 2014) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. The Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division), branded as Liberal Queensland, was the Queensland division of the Liberal Party of Australia until 2008. It was initially formed in October 1943 as the Queensland People's Party (QPP), which then absorbed the disbanded Queensland branch of the United Australia Party in 1944. In 1945, the QPP had an agreement with the newly formed Liberal Party, where in the "federal sphere", QPP would be the Queensland division of the Liberal Party and would run its candidates under the Liberal Party banner in federal elections. Peter Connolly (Queensland Politician)
Peter David Connolly QC (29 September 1920- 3 May 2009) was an Australian politician and judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland. Born in Sydney in 1920 Connolly moved to Brisbane as a child. Justice Connolly went to Marist Rosalie (Marist Brothers College Rosalie) until 1934, where he before winning a scholarship to St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace, where he was both Dux and Head Boy in his final year in 1936. Connolly served in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force between 1940 and 1946. After studying law at the University of Queensland, he was admitted as a barrister in 1949. Connolly was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in the 1957 Queensland state election for the Liberal Party. He served as MLA for Kurilpa from 1957 to 1960, but lost re-endorsement to his former campaign manager Clive Hughes in 1960; as a result, Connolly returned to the Bar, and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1963. Queensland Labor Party
The Queensland Labor Party (QLP) was a political party of Queensland, Australia formed in 1957 by a breakaway group of the then ruling Labor Party Government after the expulsion of Premier Vince Gair. In 1962 the party became the Queensland section of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP). The party continued to hold seats in the Queensland state parliament until 1972, then suffered a collapse in its vote and wound itself up in 1978. Tom Moores (politician)
Thomas Moores (1 July 1903 – 15 July 1983) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Moores was born in Gympie, Queensland, the son of John Thomas Moores and his wife Lucy (née Robinson). He was educated at One Mile State School in Gympie and then attended Brisbane Industrial High School. He worked as a manual training teacher at West End, South Brisbane and Dutton Park Opportunity state schools. In 1935-36 he went to England where he worked as a plumber and then served in the Australian Army from 1942 to 1945. On 2 September 1944 Moores married Monica Annie Lovelock and together had one daughter. He died in Brisbane in July 1983. Public career Moores was the alderman for the Kurilpa ward in the Brisbane City Council from 1939 until 1949. The Country and Progressive National Party was a short-lived conservative political party in the Australian state of Queensland. Formed in 1925, it combined the state's conservative forces in a single party and held office between 1929 and 1932 under the leadership of Arthur Edward Moore. Following repeated election defeat it split into separate rural and urban wings in 1936. National Party (Queensland, 1917)
The National Party, later the United Party was a political party in the Australian state of Queensland from 1917 until 1925. Although allied with the federal Nationalist Party, it had different origins in state politics. It sought to combine the state's Liberal Party with the Country Party but the latter soon withdrew. In 1923 the party sought a further unification with the Country Party but only attracted a few recruits.
