Electoral District Of Cunningham
Cunningham was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1888 to 2009. Prior to its abolition, the district occupied an area of the Darling Downs, south and west of Toowoomba. Historically it was centred on the town of Clifton. The eastern portion of Cunningham drew voters from the southern suburbs of Toowoomba. There were also a number of small rural towns in the electorate, including Pittsworth, Millmerran and Cambooya, but no major centres. It was solidly conservative for its entire existence, and was held by the National Party without interruption from 1920 until the Nationals merged into the Liberal National Party of Queensland. In 2008, Cunningham was abolished—with effect at the 2009 state election—following a redistribution undertaken by the Electoral Commission of Queensland. Allan Cunningham (botanist)
Allan Cunningham (13 July 1791 – 27 June 1839) was an English botany, botanist and List of explorers, explorer, primarily known for his travels in Australia to collect plants. William Allan (Queensland Politician)
William Allan (1840—1901) was a pastoralist and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Independent (politician)
An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Some politicians have political views that do not align with the platforms of any political party, and therefore choose not to affiliate with them. Stuart Copeland
Stuart William Copeland (born 19 January 1968) is an Australian politician. He was a National/ Liberal National from 2001 to 2009, representing the district of Cunningham. Political career Copeland won preselection to contest the state seat of Cunningham for the National Party defeating the Mayor of the Jondaryan Shire Peter Taylor. Taylor went on to be elected Mayor of the Toowoomba Regional Council in 2008. Copeland was elected at the February 2001 State election after a three cornered contest with the Liberal Party. Jannion Anthony "Tony" Elliott (born 29 March 1944) is a former Australian politician. He was the National Party member for Cunningham in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1974 to 2001. Sir Alan Roy Fletcher (1907–1991) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Alan Roy Fletcher was born on 26 January 1907 at Pittsworth, Queensland, the son of Alexander Roy Fletcher and his wife Rosena Wilhelmine (née McIntyre). Malcolm McIntyre (9 March 1889 – 12 August 1969) was a cheesemaker and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. National Party (Queensland, 1917)
The National Party, later the United Party was a political party in the Australian state of Queensland from 1917 until 1925. Although allied with the federal Nationalist Party, it had different origins in state politics. It sought to combine the state's Liberal Party with the Country Party but the latter soon withdrew. In 1923 the party sought a further unification with the Country Party but only attracted a few recruits. Then in 1925 it merged with the Country Party, initially as the Country Progressive Party with a few members left out and then they were absorbed into the renamed Country and Progressive National Party. The Liberal Party was a political party in the Australian state of Queensland in the early 20th century. It combined the main non-Labor forces, the "Kidstonites" of William Kidston and the Conservatives of Robert Philp, similar to the federal Commonwealth Liberal Party whose fusion it preceded.
