Double Concerto
A double concerto (Italian: ''Doppio concerto''; German: ''Doppelkonzert'') is a concerto featuring two performers—as opposed to the usual single performer, in the solo role. The two performers' instruments may be of the same type, as in Bach's Double Violin Concerto, or different, as in Brahms's Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra. The term can also refer to the use of a double orchestral body where a work is in concerto grosso form; for example, Martinů's '' Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano, and Timpani'' is commonly known by the title "Double Concerto," where the word "double" refers to the two string bodies rather than to the piano and timpani, who are not soloists in the conventional sense. A concerto (; plural ''concertos'', or ''concerti'' from the Italian plural) is, from the late Baroque era, mostly understood as an instrumental composition, written for one or more soloists accompanied by an orchestra or other ensemble. The typical three- movement structure, a slow movement (e.g., lento or adagio) preceded and followed by fast movements (e.g. presto or allegro), became a standard from the early 18th century. The concerto originated as a genre of vocal music in the late 16th century: the instrumental variant appeared around a century later, when Italians such as Giuseppe Torelli started to publish their concertos. Concert à Quatre
''Concert à quatre'' (''Concerto for four'') is the final work of the French composer Olivier Messiaen. It is a concerto written for four solo instruments (piano, cello, flute, oboe) and orchestra. Composition Messiaen first considered writing an oboe concerto for Heinz Holliger, then a piece for oboe, cello, piano, harp and orchestra on the subject of Grace. He had previously only involved the harp in his Prix de Rome cantatas. In its final form (oboe, cello, piano, flute and orchestra), ''Concert à quatre'' was conceived in 1990 and begun in the summer of 1991. Messiaen worked on it steadily until December of that year. He originally intended the piece to have five movements, but at the beginning of 1992 his decline in health slowed the piece's progress and ultimately prevented him from completing it before his death. Concerto For Piano, Violin And Strings (Mendelssohn)
The Concerto for Piano, Violin, and Strings in D minor, MWV O4, also known as the Double Concerto in D minor, was written in 1823 by Felix Mendelssohn when he was 14 years old. This piece is Mendelssohn's fourth work for a solo instrument with orchestral accompaniment, preceded by a Largo and Allegro in D minor for Piano and Strings MWV O1, the Piano Concerto in A Minor MWV O2, and the Concerto for Violin and Strings (Mendelssohn), Violin Concerto in D minor MWV O3. Mendelssohn composed the work to be performed for a private concert on May 25, 1823 at the Mendelssohn home in Berlin with his violin teacher and friend, . The piano is a stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are struck by wooden hammers that are coated with a softer material (modern hammers are covered with dense wool felt; some early pianos used leather). Concerto For Two Violas (Telemann)
The Concerto for 2 violas in G major, TWV 52:G3, is a work by Georg Philipp Telemann. Telemann was famous for writing concertos for various combinations of instruments; this concerto is unusual in that at the time the viola was not a popular solo instrument. However, Telemann was a viola player himself, and wrote for the instrument. One of his most famous concertos was viola in G major TWV 51:G9. The piece is scored for two violas, strings, and harpsichord. The work was written soon after Telemann's only visit to France, from late September/early October 1737 to May 1738 and has some distinctively French characteristics. Georg Philipp Telemann (; – 25 June 1767) was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family's wishes. After studying in Magdeburg, Zellerfeld, and Hildesheim, Telemann entered the University of Leipzig to study law, but eventually settled on a career in music. He held important positions in Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach, and Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of that city's five main churches.
