Doual’art
doual'art is a non profit cultural organisation and art centre founded in 1991 in Douala, Cameroon and focussed on new urban practices of African cities. History doual'art was registered as a non profit organization in 1992 and it was established by Marilyn Douala Bell and Didier Schaub. In 1995 they created ''Espace doual'art'', an exhibition space and gallery in the neighbourhood of Bonanjo in Douala. In 1996 they produced La Nouvelle Liberté by Joseph-Francis Sumégné, considered a landmark in Douala. In 2005 they organized the first Ars&Urbis event, an international symposium to foster discussion and theory about the contribution of art to urban transformation. The event led to the establishment of the SUD Salon Urbain de Douala, a triennial exhibition focused on public art. In December 2007 it launched the first edition of the SUD Salon Urbain de Douala. Boris Nzebo
Boris Nzebo, born in Port-Gentil in 1979, is a visual artist who lives and works in Douala, Cameroon. Biography Boris Nzebo primary studies took place in Libreville in Gabon. Arriving in Cameroon, he began by custom painting signs for hairdressing and beauty salons. Then he gave that up to devote himself exclusively to art in the early 2000s. Painting for advertising initially has left its mark on his artistic identity. As a self-taught artist, he trained in Douala with artists Koko Komégné, one of the pioneers of contemporary art in Cameroon, Hervé Yamguen and in workshops organized by Goddy Leye at ArtBakery in Bonendale near Douala, where he did a residency in 2007. Hervé Yamguen
Hervé Yamguen (born 1971 in Douala) is a Cameroonian painter and sculptor. A self-taught artist, he launched himself in painting, sculpture and he discovered a passion for the writing which enables him to wonder about its daily live. He currently works on plays. He grew up in Douala, and currently lives and works in one of the most popular districts of the city, New Bell. It is this environment which nourishes the imaginary of Hervé whose plastic work turns around the face, the body and the place of it in the world. Alioum Moussa
Alioum Moussa, born in 1977 in Maroua (Cameroon), is a graphic designer and illustrator by training. He lives and works in Yaoundé (Cameroon). Biography A self-taught visual artist, Alioum Moussa expresses himself through several media: primarily in painting but also performance, installation and assemblages of objects. In recent years, he has been experimenting with theatrical scenery. His career began in 1993, when he won the award for best Cameroonian artisan at a competition organized by the Ministry of Commerce. Goddy Leye
Goddy Leye (24 November 1965 in Mbouda, Cameroon – 19 February 2011 in Bonendale, Cameroon) was a Cameroonian artist and intellectual. His work is focused on videos, installations, conceptual art and theoretical contributions. He is the founder of the art centre ArtBakery in Bonendale, Cameroon and he was the curator and promoter of site-specific art and international projects. His role was central in the cultural and art scene in Cameroon and at the international level. Life and career Goddy Leye (real name Godfried Kadjo) was born 24 November 1965 in Mbouda, Cameroon. Pascale Marthine Tayou (born 1967) is a Cameroonian artist born in Yaounde, Cameroon in 1967. He began his career as an artist in the 1990s, and has carried out exhibitions in Cameroon, Germany, France, and Belgium, among others. His work combines various mediums and seeks to artistically redefine postcolonial culture and raise questions about globalisation and modernity. Site-specific art is artwork created to exist in a certain place. Typically, the artist takes the location into account while planning and creating the artwork. Site-specific art is produced both by commercial artists, and independently, and can include some instances of work such as sculpture, stencil graffiti, rock balancing, and other art forms. Installations can be in urban areas, remote natural settings, or underwater. Hervé Youmbi
Hervé Gabriel Ngamago Youmbi, born in Bangui, Central African Republic on March 25, 1973, is a Cameroonian artist who lives and works in Douala. He is a founding member of the Cercle Kapsiki, a collective of five Cameroonian artists, founded in 1998. Biography Hervé Youmbi has a diploma from the Institut de Formation Artistique (IFA) in Mbalmayo, Cameroon, and later studied at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg (France) from October 2000 to June 2001. He teaches art at several towns in Cameroon, at the art institutes of Nkongsamba and Foumban, and in the art academies and universities of Douala and Dschang.
