In enzymology, a diacylglycerol cholinephosphotransferase () is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reaction CDP-choline + 1,2-diacylglycerol \rightleftharpoons CMP + a phosphatidylcholine Thus, the two substrates of this enzyme are CDP-choline and 1,2-diacylglycerol, whereas its two products are CMP and phosphatidylcholine. Classification This enzyme belongs to the family of transferases, specifically those transferring non-standard substituted phosphate groups. Nomenclature The systematic name of this enzyme class is CDP choline:1,2-diacylglycerol cholinephosphotransferase. Phosphatidylcholines (PC) are a class of phospholipids that incorporate choline as a headgroup. They are a major component of biological membranes and can be easily obtained from a variety of readily available sources, such as egg yolk or soybeans, from which they are mechanically or chemically extracted using hexane. They are also a member of the lecithin group of yellow-brownish fatty substances occurring in animal and plant tissues. Glycerophospholipids or phosphoglycerides are glycerol-based phospholipids. They are the main component of biological membranes. Cytidine monophosphate, also known as 5'-cytidylic acid or simply cytidylate, and abbreviated CMP, is a nucleotide that is used as a monomer in RNA. It is an ester of phosphoric acid with the nucleoside cytidine. CMP consists of the phosphate group, the pentose sugar ribose, and the nucleobase cytosine; hence, a ribonucleoside monophosphate.
