The Peerage of France (french: Pairie de France) was a hereditary distinction within the French nobility which appeared in 1180 in the Middle Ages. The prestigious title and position of Peer of France (french: Pair de France, links=no) was held by the greatest, highest-ranking members of the French nobility. French peerage thus differed from British peerage (to whom the term "baronage", also employed as the title of the lowest noble rank, was applied in its generic sense), for the vast majority of French nobles, from baron to duke, were not peers. The title of ''Peer of France'' was an extraordinary honour granted only to a small number of dukes, counts, and princes of the Roman Catholic Church. It was analogous to the rank of ''Grandee of Spain'' in this respect. Louis De Pardaillan De Gondrin (1688–1712)
Louis de Pardaillan de Gondrin (July 1688 – 22 February 1712) was a French nobleman. He was a grandson of Madame de Montespan. He was known as the ''marquis de Gondrin'' during his lifetime. Biography Born at the Château of Montespan, he was the eldest of two sons born to Louis Antoine de Pardaillan de Gondrin and his wife Julie Françoise de Crussol (1669–1742), daughter of the Duke of Uzès. His younger brother Pierre was the Duke-Bishop of Langres. As the eldest, he was expected to succeed to be the head of the House of Pardaillan de Gondrin. Known as the Marquis of Gondrin in his lifetime, he was outlived by his father and as such never succeeded to the Duchy of Antin which was created in 1711 by Louis XIV. He married Marie Victoire de Noailles, one of the twenty children of the Duke of Noailles and Marie Françoise de Bournonville. The couple married on 25 January 1707. The title of Duke of Noailles was a French peerage created in 1663 for Anne de Noailles, Count of Ayen. History Noailles is the name of a prominent French noble family, derived from the castle of Noailles in the territory of Ayen, between Brive and Turenne in Limousin, and claiming to date back to the 11th century. The family did not obtain fame until the 16th century, when its head, Antoine de Noailles (1504–1562), became admiral of France and was ambassador in England during three important years (1553–1556), maintaining a gallant but unsuccessful rivalry with the Spanish ambassador, Simon Renard. Henri de Noailles (1554–1623), son of Antoine, was a commander in the religious wars and was made comte d'Ayen by Henry IV of France in 1593.
