Diocese Of Borg
Borg is a diocese in the Church of Norway. The diocese includes parishes in the counties of Østfold and Akershus, excluding Asker and Bærum. It was created in 1969 by separation from the Diocese of Oslo. The cathedral city is Fredrikstad. Fredrikstad Cathedral Fredrikstad Cathedral was designed by architect Waldemar F. Luhr and built in 1880. The cathedral as built of red brick and has a capacity of 1,100 seats. It was originally named Vestre Fredrikstad Church. When Borg diocese was created in 1968, the cathedral changed its name. The cathedral is in the Gothic Revival style. The stained-glass windows by Emanuel Vigeland date from 1917. The richly decorated pulpit and the colourful wooden altar piece, dating back to 1897, were the work of Wilhelm Peters and represents Jesus healing the blind man. Fredrikstad Cathedral
Fredrikstad Cathedral ( no, Fredrikstad Domkirke) is a cathedral located in the west of the city of Fredrikstad in Viken county, Norway. It is the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Borg of the Church of Norway. The church was elevated to cathedral status in 1969 with the creation of the new Diocese of Borg. The cathedral has space for 1100 people. History and description The church was originally designed by architect Ferdinand Waldemar Lühr as a parish church. It was built between 1879 and 1880 in the Gothic Revival style in brick, with a floor plan in the form of a Latin cross. It has a single tower of 72 metres in height at the western end, which is part of the main façade. It was consecrated on 13 October 1880 when it was first known as Fredrikstad Vestre kirke ("Fredrikstad west church"). Wilhelm Peters (painter)
Wilhelm Otto Peters (17 August 1851 – 18 November 1935) was a Norwegian painter who participated in the Modern Breakthrough in Nordic painting. He associated closely with the Skagen Painters in the early 1880s and was one of the first to paint the fishermen in Brøndums store. Early life Born in Oslo, Peters studied drawing from 1867 to 1870 under David Arnesen and J.F. Eckersberg. Working as an illustrator, he came to the attention of Karl IV who made arrangements for him to study at the Royal Swedish Academy in Stockholm from 1871 to 1873. Aurskog-Høland is a municipality in Akershus in Viken county, Norway. It is part of the Romerike traditional region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Bjørkelangen. The municipality of Rømskog, in Østfold county was merged into Aurskog-Høland on January 1, 2020. Aremark
Aremark is a municipality in Viken county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Fosby. Aremark was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The new municipality of Øymark was separated from Aremark on 1 July 1903. General information Name The Norse form of the name was ''Aramǫrk''. The first element is the genitive of the name of the lake ''Ari'' (now Aremarksjøen). Sarpsborg ( or ), historically Borg, is a city and municipality in Viken county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Sarpsborg. Sarpsborg is part of the fifth largest urban area in Norway when paired with neighbouring Fredrikstad. As of 1 January 2018, according to Statistics Norway these two municipalities have a total population of 136,127 with 55,840 in Sarpsborg and 81,278 in Fredrikstad. Halden
Halden (), between 1665 and 1928 known as Fredrikshald, is both a town and a municipality in Viken county, Norway. The municipality borders Sarpsborg to the northwest, Rakkestad to the north and Aremark to the east, as well as the Swedish municipalities Strömstad, Tanum and Dals-Ed respectively to the southwest, south and southeast. Hvaler
Hvaler is a municipality that is a group of islands in the southern part of Viken County, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Skjærhalden, on the island of Kirkeøy. The only police station in the municipality is located in Skjærhalden. Hvaler was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see ''formannskapsdistrikt''). Name The name is the plural form of ''hval'', which means "whale". Viken (county)
Viken is a county under disestablishment in Eastern Norway that was established on 1 January 2020 by the merger of Akershus, Buskerud and Østfold with the addition of three other municipalities. Viken was controversial from the onset, with an approval rating of about 20% in the region, and the merger was resisted by all the three counties. Viken has been compared to gerrymandering. The county executive of Viken determined in 2019, before the merger had taken effect, that the county's disestablishment is its main political goal, and the formal process to dissolve Viken was initiated by the county executive in right after the 2021 Norwegian parliamentary election in which parties seeking to reverse the merger won a majority.
