The civic mayor of Doncaster is the ceremonial leader of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster. The civic mayor is appointed annually from the members of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council and serves for one municipal year. History The first mayor of Doncaster, in 1493, was a Thomas Pigborne. The first mayor of the Borough of Doncaster under the Municipal Corporations Act 1835 was Sir William Bryan Cooke, 8th baronet of Wheatley. The role was reconstituted on 1 April 1974 to cover the larger Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster. On 18 May 2018 history was made when Councillor Majid Khan became the first ethnic minority Mayor of Doncaster. Since May 2002 there has also been a directly elected mayor of Doncaster and in May 2012, voters decided in a referendum to keep the position. Mansion House, Doncaster
Doncaster Mansion House is a Grade I listed building in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It is owned and managed by Doncaster Council, and the venue is used for civic and private functions, including tours, afternoon teas, wedding services, and official receptions. The Mansion House stands on the site of the Carmelite Friary, which had been established in Doncaster in 1350 and remained until its dissolution on 13 November 1538, after which the buildings were destroyed. During the 18th century, Doncaster's position on the Great North Road brought wealth to the town. The town's corporation was frequently called on to host entertainments, initially at the mayor's house or the Angel or Three Cranes inns. In 1719, they took a lease on a house in the High Street for holding feasts, but let this lapse around 1727. The City of Doncaster is a metropolitan borough with city status in South Yorkshire, England. It is named after its principal settlement, Doncaster, and includes the surrounding suburbs of Doncaster as well as numerous towns and villages. The district has large amounts of countryside. The Municipal Corporations Act 1835 (5 & 6 Will 4 c 76), sometimes known as the Municipal Reform Act, was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that reformed local government in the incorporated boroughs of England and Wales. The legislation was part of the reform programme of the Whigs and followed the Reform Act 1832, which had abolished most of the rotten boroughs for parliamentary purposes. Royal commission The government of Lord Grey, having carried reform out of parliamentary constituencies, turned its attention to local government. Patrick Stirling (5 November 1862 − 1925) was a Scottish footballer who played for Doncaster Rovers and was Mayor of Doncaster. His father, also called Patrick Stirling, was Locomotive Superintendent of the Great Northern Railway and designer of the 4-2-2 steam locomotive Stirling single that set speed records during the race to the north. Stirling was born in Kilmarnock in 1862 to parents Patrick and Margaret, and had two elder brothers, Robert and Matthew.
