Countermonument
Anti-monumentalism (much more often: counter-monumentalism) is a tendency in contemporary art that intentionally challenges every aspect (form, subject, meaning, etc) of traditional public monuments. It often claims to deny the presence of any imposing, authoritative social force in public spaces. It developed in Germany as an opposition to monumentalism whereby authorities (usually the state or dictator) establish monuments in public spaces to symbolize themselves or their ideology, and influence the historical narrative of the place. The '' Vietnam Veterans Memorial'' (1982), or Jochen Gerz's '' 2146 Stones'' (1993) can be considered examples of anti-monumentalism. Mechtild Widrich
Mechtild Widrich is an Austrian art historian, curator, and professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Educated at University of Vienna (M.Phil Art History) and the MIT School of Architecture and Planning#Academic and research program, MIT School of Architecture (PhD History, Theory, and Criticism) Widrich taught art and architectural history at the University of Vienna, the ETH Zurich, ETH Zürich, the University of Zurich, University of Zürich and the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Contemporary Art
Contemporary art is the art of today, produced in the second half of the 20th century or in the 21st century. Contemporary artists work in a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world. Their art is a dynamic combination of Medium (arts), materials, methods, concepts, and subjects that continue the challenging of boundaries that was already well underway in the 20th century. Diverse and eclectic, contemporary art as a whole is distinguished by the very lack of a uniform, organising principle, ideology, or "-ism". Contemporary art is part of a cultural dialogue that concerns larger contextual frameworks such as personal and cultural identity, family, community, and nationality. Björn Lövin (17 December 1937 – 6 March 2009) was a Swedish painter, sculptor and installation artist. Chevron (insignia)
A chevron (also spelled cheveron, especially in older documents) is a V-shaped mark or symbol, often inverted. The word is usually used in reference to a kind of fret in architecture, or to a badge or insignia used in military or police uniforms to indicate rank or length of service, or in heraldry and the designs of flags (see flag terminology). Ancient history Appearing on pottery and petrographs throughout the ancient world, the chevron can be considered to be one of the oldest symbols in human history, with V-shaped markings occurring as early as the Neolithic era (6th to 5th millennia BC) as part of the Vinča symbols inventory. Maya Lin
Maya Ying Lin (born October 5, 1959) is an American designer and sculptor. In 1981, while an undergraduate at Yale University, she achieved national recognition when she won a national design competition for the planned Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Lin has designed numerous memorials, public and private buildings, landscapes, and sculptures. Although best known for historical memorials, she is also known for environmentally themed works, which often address environmental decline.
