Coherence (linguistics)
Coherence in linguistics is what makes a text semantically meaningful. It is especially dealt with in text linguistics. Coherence is achieved through syntactic features such as the use of deictic, anaphoric and cataphoric elements or a logical tense structure, and semantic features such as presuppositions and implications connected to general world knowledge. Robert De Beaugrande and Wolfgang U. Dressler define coherence as a "continuity of senses" and "the mutual access and relevance within a configuration of concepts and relations". Thereby a textual world is created that does not have to comply to the real world. But within this textual world the arguments also have to be connected logically so that the reader/hearer can produce coherence. Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Wolfgang is a German male given name traditionally popular in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Coh-Metrix
Coh-Metrix is a computational tool that produces indices of the linguistic and discourse representations of a text. Developed by Arthur C. Graesser and Danielle S. McNamara, Coh-Metrix analyzes texts on many different features. Measurements Coh-Metrix can be used in many different ways to investigate the cohesion of the explicit text and the coherence of the mental representation of the text. "Our definition of cohesion consists of characteristics of the explicit text that play some role in helping the reader mentally connect ideas in the text" (Graesser, McNamara, & Louwerse, 2003). Systemic Functional Linguistics
Systemic functional linguistics (SFL) is an approach to linguistics, among functional linguistics, that considers language as a social semiotic system. It was devised by Michael Halliday, who took the notion of system from J. R. Firth, his teacher (Halliday, 1961). Firth proposed that systems refer to possibilities subordinated to structure; Halliday "liberated" choice from structure and made it the central organising dimension of SFL. Semantic Prosody
Semantic prosody, also discourse prosody, describes the way in which certain seemingly neutral words can be perceived with positive or negative associations through frequent occurrences with particular collocations. Coined in analogy to linguistic prosody, popularised by Bill Louw. An example given by John Sinclair is the verb ''set in'', which has a negative prosody: e.g. ''rot'' (with negative associations) is a prime example of what is going to 'set in'. Another well-known example is the verb sense of ''cause'', which is also used mostly in a negative context (accident, catastrophe, etc.), though one can also say that something "caused happiness". Brady Wagoner
Brady Wagoner (born September 19, 1980) is an American-Danish professor of psychology at the University of Copenhagen and Aalborg University (Denmark), where he is currently co-director of the Centre for Cultural Psychology. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge on a Gates Cambridge scholarship, where he also co-created the F. C. Bartlett internet archive. His research has mainly focused on cultural psychology, memory, social change and the history of psychology. One of his key contributions has been to study remembering as a cultural and constructive process, further developing the legacy of Frederic Bartlett. In linguistics and philosophy, a presupposition is an implicit assumption about the world or background belief relating to an utterance whose truth is taken for granted in discourse.
