Cod Icefish

Channichthyidae
The crocodile icefish or white-blooded fish comprise a family (Channichthyidae) of notothenioid fish found in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. They are the only known vertebrates to lack hemoglobin in their blood as adults. Icefish populations are known to reside in the Atlantic and Indian sectors of the Southern Ocean, as well as the continental shelf waters surrounding Antarctica. Water temperatures in these regions remain relatively stable, generally ranging from . One icefish, ''Champsocephalus esox,'' is distributed north of the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone. The grey rockcod (''Lepidonotothen squamifrons''), also known as the grey notothen, stripe-eyes notothen or stripe-eyed rockcod, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Nototheniidae, the notothens or cod icefishes. It is native to the Southern Ocean. The grey rockcod feeds mainly on macrozooplankton and is of minor importance to commercial fisheries. It is the only species in the genus ''Lepidonotothen''. ''Gvozdarus'' is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Nototheniidae, the notothens or cod icefishes. It is native to the Southern Ocean. Taxonomy ''Gvozdarus'' was first formally described as a genus in 1989 by the Soviet ichthyologist Arkady Vladimirovich Balushkin with the type species by monotypy being ''Gvozdarus svetovidovi'', a second species has subsequently been described. Some authorities place this taxon in the subfamily Pleuragrammatinae, but the 5th edition of ''Fishes of the World'' does not include subfamilies in the Nototheniidae. The name of the genus is a Latinised version of a local name for the zander (''Sander lucioperca'') in Veliky Novgorod, Russia. Fredrik Adam Smitt, (9 May 1839 in Halmstad – 19 February 1904 in Stockholm), was a Swedish zoologist. Biography Smitt studied in Lund University, Lund and Uppsala University, Uppsala where he received his doctorate in 1863. In 1861 and 1868 He participated in the Swedish expeditions to Svalbard. In 1871 he was appointed professor at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, where he was in charge of the Department of Vertebrates. From 1879 he also taught zoology at Stockholm University. Smitt produced both popular works and many scientific papers. Besides his scientific work, Smitt also championed the modernization of the techniques herring fisheries. Hugh Hamilton DeWitt (28 December 1933-5 January 1995) was an American ichthyologist, marine biologist and oceanographer. DeWitt was born on 28 December 1933 in San Jose, California, son of Carl Bryce Seligman, a country doctor, and Honor Pettit Seligman, a teacher of mathematics and Latin. His surname at birth was Seligman but at his father's urging he and his brothers changed their name to DeWitt in the 1950s, a name from their mother’s side of the family, as they had encountered mistaken preconceptions while attending High Schools in the eastern United States. His brothers were the theoretical physicist Bryce Seligman DeWitt, Lloyd Lewis DeWitt (1926-1988), who joined the United States Foreign Service and Hiram Pettit DeWitt (b.1936), a teacher.
