Blended Brake
Dynamic braking is the use of an electric traction motor as a Electric generator, generator when slowing a vehicle such as an electric locomotive, electric or diesel locomotive, diesel-electric locomotive. It is termed "Resistor#Adjustable resistors, rheostatic" if the generated electrical power is dissipated as heat in brake grid resistors, and "regenerative brake, regenerative" if the power is returned to the supply line. Dynamic braking reduces wear on friction-based braking components, and regeneration lowers net energy consumption. In electrical engineering, the armature is the winding (or set of windings) of an electric machine which carries alternating current. The armature windings conduct AC even on DC machines, due to the commutator action (which periodically reverses current direction) or due to electronic commutation, as in brushless DC motors. The armature can be on either the rotor (rotating part) or the stator (stationary part), depending on the type of electric machine. The armature windings interact with the magnetic field (magnetic flux) in the air-gap; the magnetic field is generated either by permanent magnets, or electromagnets formed by a conducting coil. ALP-46
The Bombardier ALP-46 is an electric locomotive built in Germany by Bombardier Transportation, Bombardier between 2001 and 2002 for use in the United States. It is derived from the German DBAG Class 101, Class 101. New Jersey Transit (NJT) is the only railroad to operate this locomotive model, which is used across the electrified NJT system, specifically on the Northeast Corridor Line, Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line, North Jersey Coast, Morris & Essex Lines, Morris & Essex, and Montclair-Boonton Line, Montclair-Boonton lines. These locomotives replaced the ALP-44 locomotives, which were all retired by 2012. Orders and delivery NJT ordered 29 locomotives: the first 24 ALP-46 locomotives in December 1999 and an additional five locomotives in September 2001.
