Bhangra Music
Bhangra () is a type of non-traditional music of Punjab originating in the Southall area of United Kingdom. It is a type of upbeat popular music associated with the Punjabi diaspora in Britain. The style has its origins in the folk music of Punjab as well as western pop music of the 1970s and 1980s. Prior to this musical fusion, Bhangra existed only as Bhangra (dance), a dance form in the native Punjab. This British music was unique in that it was not traditional nor did it seek any authenticity. While the traditional folk music of Punjab has a set of melodies that are used by various singers, Bhangra was a form of strict "band culture" in that new melodies were composed for each song. Punjabi folk music (Shahmukhi: پنجابی لوک موسیقی pa, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਸੰਗੀਤ or Punjabi Folk) is the traditional music on the traditional musical instruments of the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent. There is a great repertoire of music from the time of birth through the different stages of joy and sorrow till death. Alaap (band)
Alaap are a British Asian live band credited as the founders of British Bhangra. In 2017, the BBC described the group as the 'most prolific' bhangra band. History The band formed in Southall, West London, in 1977. Originally a traditional bhangra band, they were prominent in the community circuit, playing at weddings and family gatherings in Southall. They had an early break on the BBC TV Asian programme, ''Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan''. In 1978, they were discovered by talent scout Pran Gohill of Multitone Records and they recorded several albums with the label. ''Teri Chunni de Sitare'' (1979) was the first album to be recorded by a British bhangra group, and is widely recognised as marking the birth of the ‘Southall scene’. In 1984, they began work with Deepak Kazanchi on the album ''Ten Chunm De Sitare'', which introduced elements of contemporary electronic dance music into the band’s sound. Baljit Singh "Bally" Sagoo ( Punjabi: ਬਲਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੱਗੂ, born 19 May 1964) is a British-Indian record producer and DJ. Born in Delhi, India, Sagoo was raised in Birmingham, England. He entered the recording and entertainment industries in 1989. He is the figurehead of the UK/Belgium-based entertainment company, Fresh Dope Industries. Early life Sagoo grew up in the Balsall Heath area of Birmingham. His father Saminder Sagoo ran his own retail music outlet in the 1970s, after playing in The Musafirs in the late 1960s. In his teens, Sagoo developed a taste for reggae, soul and disco. He spent his college years producing mix-tapes for friends and dee-jaying at local events. Apna Sangeet were a British Asian Bhangra band from Birmingham, England. The group was formed in 1984 by six Birmingham musicians. In contrast to the more western sounds of contemporary groups like DCS, they played a very traditional style of bhangra with a dhol player centre stage. By 1991 they were platinum disc holders, and held the title of UK Asian Pop Award for Best Asian Band. By 1994, the group had released nine albums and sold more than 2,000,000 records, and were awarded Best Bhangra Band by Movie International Magazine. Sahotas were a U.K. based Bhangra/Rock/ World music band. The band, started in Bilston, Wolverhampton in the mid-1980s, had a line-up of five brothers. They have released music in both English and Punjabi. The lead singer was Surj Sahota, and the music director/producer was Mukhtar Sahota. The band's music is very different from conventional Punjabi music, combining the Bhangra genre with pop, house, reggae and rock, focusing on vocal styles and sounds.
