Great Ayton is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. The River Leven (a tributary of the River Tees) flows through the village, which lies just north of the North York Moors. Etymology Great Ayton's name derives from Old English ''Ea-tun'', meaning 'river farm'. The river flowing through Great Ayton is the Leven, a tributary of the River Tees. A later addition of the word 'great' differentiates the village from nearby Little Ayton. History In the 18th and 19th centuries Great Ayton was a centre for the industries of weaving, tanning, brewing, and tile making. Subsequently, whinstone for road surfacing was also quarried from the Cleveland Dyke along with ironstone, jet and alum from the Cleveland Hills. Great Ayton was home to the Great Ayton Friends' School (Quaker) from 1841 until it closed in 1997. The village serves as the base for Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team. Ayton, Scottish Borders
Ayton is a small village located in the historic county of Berwickshire, today part of the Scottish Borders region. It is on the Eye Water, from which it is said to take its name: Ayton means 'Eye-town'. It contains the former ancient tollbooth or town hall with a clock tower, the Hemelvaart Bier Cafe (an entertainment venue as well as a bar) and a village store. It is located near the East Coast Main Line railway line, which runs between London, King's Cross and Edinburgh, Waverley station, the closest station being Reston station. The A1 (Great North Road) originally ran through the heart of the village, but during the 1980s a bypass was built to the East of the village. Ayton was the location of a coaching inn on the road between London and Edinburgh. Ayton is a community in the municipality of West Grey, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. Formerly the seat of local government for the disbanded Normanby Township, it is a rural village on the banks of the South Saugeen River and the center of a prosperous farming area. Located on the intersection of Grey Road 3 and Grey Road 9, Ayton is geographically south of Hanover, southwest of Durham, and a neighbour to Neustadt. West Ayton
West Ayton is a village and civil parish in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England. Located upon the west bank of the River Derwent adjacent to East Ayton. According to the 2011 UK census, West Ayton parish had a population of 881, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 831. The ruins of Ayton castle can be found to the east of the village. The tower dates back to 1390 and was built by Ralph Eure. During the 1670s, stone from the castle was used to rebuild the bridge over the River Derwent. Just south of the village is the Wykeham Lakes park. This is a fishery and water-sports complex run by the Downe family's Dawnay Estates programme.
