Area Code 641
Area code 641 is a telephone area code for a central portion of Iowa, including Mason City, and Ottumwa. It was split off from area 515 on July 9, 2000; this was the first such split in Iowa since the establishment of the North American Numbering Plan in 1947. Traffic pumping Many calling card and conference service providers operate in area 641. For calls to a rural number in area 641, the long distance provider has to pay the termination fee to the receiving telecom party: up to 8 cents a minute. Using this arbitrage, some of the service providers operate here and require one to dial the "local access number" in area 641. Large telecom providers are the hardest hit with the costs for these so-called free service providers. Around March 2007 AT&T filed a suit to withhold these arbitrage payments (AT&T got a $2 million bill a month). In 2006, various companies began using Iowa's 641 as a number to access voice over IP gateways, including one which purported to allow users ...

Telephone
A telephone is a telecommunications device that permits two or more users to conduct a conversation when they are too far apart to be easily heard directly. A telephone converts sound, typically and most efficiently the human voice, into electronic signals that are transmitted via cables and other communication channels to another telephone which reproduces the sound to the receiving user. The term is derived from el, τῆλε (''tēle'', ''far'') and φωνή (''phōnē'', ''voice''), together meaning ''distant voice''. A common short form of the term is ''phone'', which came into use early in the telephone's history. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell was the first to be granted a United States patent for a device that produced clearly intelligible replication of the human voice at a second device. This instrument was further developed by many others, and became rapidly indispensable in business, government, and in households. The essential elements of a telephone are a ...

People's Republic Of China
China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a country in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population exceeding 1.4 billion, slightly ahead of India. China spans the equivalent of five time zones and borders fourteen countries by land, the most of any country in the world, tied with Russia. Covering an area of approximately , it is the world's third largest country by total land area. The country consists of 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four municipalities, and two Special Administrative Regions (Hong Kong and Macau). The national capital is Beijing, and the most populous city and financial center is Shanghai. Modern Chinese trace their origins to a cradle of civilization in the fertile basin of the Yellow River in the North China Plain. The semi-legendary Xia dynasty in the 21st century BCE and the well-attested Shang and Zhou dynasties developed a bureaucratic political system to serve hereditary monarchies, o ...

Area Code 712
Area code 712 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the most western part of Iowa, including the cities of Spencer, Le Mars, Sioux City, Council Bluffs, Red Oak, Sheldon, Storm Lake, Carroll, Sac City, and Shenandoah. Area code 712 was one of the original three area codes for the state of Iowa established in 1947, and is the only one that still has its original boundaries. It is one of the few remaining original area codes (not counting those covering an entire state) that has never been split or overlaid. Despite the proliferation of cell phones and pagers (particularly in Sioux City and Council Bluffs), it is projected to stay that way until at least 2031.https://nationalnanpa.com/reports/October%202021%20NPA%20Exhaust%20Analysis.pdf See also * List of Iowa area codes References External links {{Area code box, State=IA, Width=60%, This=area code 712, N= 507, S=660, E= 515, 641 __NOTOC__ Year 641 ( DCXLI) w ...

Area Code 515
Area code 515 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for most of the north-central part of the U.S. state of Iowa. The numbering plan area includes Des Moines, Ames, Ankeny, Humboldt, Boone, Fort Dodge, Jefferson, Johnston, Urbandale, Algona and Indianola. Despite its relatively low population, Iowa was originally divided into three numbering plan areas (NPAs), with each border line running roughly in north–south directions. Area code 515 originally served the central part of the state, stretching border to border from Minnesota to Missouri. In 2000, the eastern and southern portions of the area were split off with area code 641, leaving 515 with only about one-fourth of its original area, including Des Moines and the area northwest of the city. Only one small portion in the north of the numbering plan area borders another state, Minnesota. The heavy metal music band Slipknot named one of their songs "(515)", because the band is from ...

Area Code 563
Area code 563 is a telephone area code for the east central and northeast corner of the state of Iowa, and includes most of the Iowa side of the Quad Cities. Area code 563 was split from area code 319 in 2001, becoming active on March 25, 2001, and finally becoming mandatory on December 2, 2001. Prior to the implementation of the code, there was debate over whether the 563 code should have been implemented as a split, or overlaid over the existing 319 code. Mobile phone providers were in favor of the overlay, as a split would have required ''en masse'' reprogramming of cell phones. However, at the time, overlays were still a new concept that met with considerable public resistance (due to requirements for 10-digit dialing and mixing of area codes in the same area). It was ultimately decided to use a geographical split instead. Area Code 660
Area code 660 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the northern and western part of the U.S. state of Missouri. It was created on October 12, 1997, in an area code split of the 816 numbering plan area (NPA) History When the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) created a universal North American telephone numbering plan for Operator Toll Dialing in 1947, Missouri was divided into two numbering plan areas. Area code 816 served points generally north and west of Columbia and Jefferson City, while area code 314 served the eastern third of the state, including St. Louis. In 1951, a third NPA with area code 417 was created for southwestern Missouri. This reduced 816 to the northern third of Missouri, including the Kansas City metropolitan area. By late 1996, the proliferation of cell phones and market reforms related to deregulation by the Telecommunications Act of 1996 required an additional area code for northern Missouri. On Ap ...

Area Code 507
Area code 507 is the telephone numbering plan code for the southern fifth of Minnesota, including cities such as Rochester, Mankato, Worthington, Fairmont, Albert Lea, Northfield, and Austin. It was the third area code created for use in the state in 1954, following the original 218 and 612. It was created from the southwestern portion of 218 and the southern portion of 612. In the original 1947 plan, area codes containing "0" (zero) as a middle digit were only assigned to states that were entirely covered by a single area code. Area code 507, along with area code 606 in Kentucky and area code 607 in New York, were the first area codes with a middle digit of "0" to be assigned to states that were covered by more than one area code. The region was directly bordered by 612 (to the north) until that area code was divided in the 1990s. The western half of 507 bordered area code 320 starting in 1996, and then later came to border also area code 651 (1998) and area code 952 ( ...

Voice Over IP
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), also called IP telephony, is a method and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. The terms Internet telephony, broadband telephony, and broadband phone service specifically refer to the provisioning of communications services (voice, fax, SMS, voice-messaging) over the Internet, rather than via the public switched telephone network (PSTN), also known as plain old telephone service (POTS). Overview The steps and principles involved in originating VoIP telephone calls are similar to traditional digital telephony and involve signaling, channel setup, digitization of the analog voice signals, and encoding. Instead of being transmitted over a circuit-switched network, the digital information is packetized and transmission occurs as IP packets over a packet-switched network. They transport media streams using special media delivery protoc ...

Area Code
A telephone numbering plan is a type of numbering scheme used in telecommunication to assign telephone numbers to subscriber telephones or other telephony endpoints. Telephone numbers are the addresses of participants in a telephone network, reachable by a system of destination code routing. Telephone numbering plans are defined in each of the administrative regions of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and in private telephone networks. For public numbering systems, geographic location typically plays a role in the sequence of numbers assigned to each telephone subscriber. Many numbering plan administrators subdivide their territory of service into geographic regions designated by a prefix, often called an area code or city code, which is a set of digits forming the most-significant part of the dialing sequence to reach a telephone subscriber. Numbering plans may follow a variety of design strategies which have often arisen from the historical evolution of individu ...

AT&T
AT&T Inc. is an American multinational telecommunications holding company headquartered at Whitacre Tower in Downtown Dallas, Texas. It is the world's largest telecommunications company by revenue and the third largest provider of mobile telephone services in the U.S. , AT&T was ranked 13th on the ''Fortune'' 500 rankings of the largest United States corporations, with revenues of $168.8 billion. During most of the 20th century, AT&T had a monopoly on phone service in the United States. The company began its history as the American District Telegraph Company, formed in St. Louis in 1878. After expanding services to Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, through a series of mergers, it became Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1920, which was then a subsidiary of American Telephone and Telegraph Company. The latter was a successor of the original Bell Telephone Company founded by Alexander Graham Bell in 1877. The American Bell Telephone Company formed the American Tel ...
