Christian Appy
Christian Gerard Appy (born April 5, 1955) is a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is widely known as a leading expert on the Vietnam War experience. The most recent of his three books on the subject is ''American Reckoning: The Vietnam War and Our National Identity''. It explores the war's impact on American politics, culture, and foreign policy from the 1950s to the Obama presidency. Biography Appy was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1955. In 1964, his family moved to Westport, Connecticut, where he attended public school and graduated from Staples High School in 1973. At Amherst College, class of 1977, he majored in American Studies and wrote a prize-winning honors thesis on Appalachian coal miners. He received his Ph.D in the History of American Civilization at Harvard University in 1987. His dissertation received the Ralph Henry Gabriel dissertation prize from the American Studies Association. Appy, Ariège
Appy (; oc, Api) is a commune in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region of southwestern France. The inhabitants of the commune are known as ''Pynarols'' or ''Pynaroles'' Geography Appy is located some 15 km south-east of Tarascon-sur-Ariège and 12 km north-west of Ax-les-Thermes. Access is by the D20 road from Axiat in the east passing through the village and continuing to Caychax in the west. Appy is a remote mountainous commune, heavily forested in the south and west, with the rest alpine terrain. In the north of the commune is the ''Etang d'Appy'' from which flows the ''Ruisseau de Lac d'Appy'' towards the south-west to join the ''Ruisseau de Caychax'' which joins the Ariège at Albiès. The eastern boundary of the commune is formed by the ''Ruisseau de Girabel'' which flows south joining with other streams to join the Ariege at Urs. The Appy Awards, presented on 11 April 2011, marked successful and popular applications (generally known as "apps") for mobile devices. Sponsored by The Carphone Warehouse, Europe's largest independent mobile phone retailer, awards were presented in ten categories in a ceremony hosted by television presenters Richard Hammond and Amanda Byram. According to the sponsors, it was "the UK's first major app awards ceremony designed to recognise innovation and development in app technology." The company hoped to make it an annual event. Carphone Warehouse staff nominated around 1,000 apps from which a panel of judges produced a shortlist of 50, announced by Hammond in February 2011. In an online process, about 30,000 votes were cast by the public to choose the winners. Most of the shortlisted apps are free to download but others require a one-off or an ongoing payment.
